Skywind modelling thread (modellers needed)

Submitted by eloth on

Since we no longer can use morrowind assets, we have to find or make replacement meshes. I know that most meshes has already been made by Phitt and Razorwind for the sheogorad mod, and the vvardenfell remade project.

So we need you to either make new models if you have the talent, or go search all around for meshes we can use legally. I have just started modelling a replacement for the seyda neen lighthouse(the original one was not so good so it will not be missed by me):

Still alot of work left on it, need more details etc. Anyone having some suggestions/wishes for this particular model, or any other future models from me?

First off we should compile a list of meshes that has not been remade by modders.

whatever plans that are made, im going to make my own version with only skyrim, and remade assets.

I haven't taken part in this thread, since I have no knowledge whatsoever on models and therefore I respect where both ideas come from.

@Eloth : hope you'll continue sharing your work :D

The Bethesda guy basically only told you guys that if you use the meshes that you can't discuss the project on the official sites, nothing more. Maybe you all take this too heavy, do you want to change all the meshes just be on their official site? Or do you want to finish the project soon, with Morrowind models so it doesn't have this non-Morrowind feeling.

If you do decide to change, keep in mind the word inspired, that means that even a tiny change would be enough to make it okay, it doesn't mean that it needs to be completely different because that would mean you don't use the original mesh as your inspiration.

Anruin is right, we really do need a leader. As for the meshes, being on Nexus/Beth site isn't that big of a deal. I just don't wanna see a C&D letter. If Anruin is right about how long it'll take to replace the Morrowind meshes, maybe we should just finish up other stuff, and remove the Morrowind meshs little by little.

I suppose I'll start reading up a bit on meshs and learn a bit more on them, because I don't wanna see Eloth do all the work by him self.

The thing about a leader is that there is no one who is qualified to take the job.  Most of those who would be good candidates for a project lead have chosen to stick with Morroblivion.  In fact, the only one I can think of that has put forth enough work, and shown enough dedication is Eloth.  Of course, then Anruin's statement kind of backfires because Eloth would want new meshes (and so would I), and Anruin was talking about how it would not be good to get new meshes.

About new models:  No one needs to get upset over it!!  They are not taking any workers away from other projects (at least no one that isn't much better at working with visuals than the masterfile anyway), and the visuals will improve.  Also, there are many HIGH QUALITY models out there that we can use, it is not like we would be using horrible amateur models, just for the sake of replacing everything.  I'll bet that once this mesh replacer is released there will be very few people who would choose to use the older models.  Mark my words.

Dave was the project leader of morroblivion I believe.?

But what does the leader need to do,if it is to just make sure that nothing that has not been tweaked in some way goes into the master then I could be that guy.

I can`t do mesh or other modeling, but can oversee the work that is done, and agree that meshes/textures etc if tweaked in some way are not then the originals and therefore legal.

But I think that a moderator should be the leader of this project, I thought that we already had a project leader.?

IMO we should continue to work on the project, get it finished, then anything that needs changing can be done before final realease.?

New models would be neat and all, but how long would it take to replace the old meshes?

Good question.  :)

I'd ask Eloth that one, but from the looks of it, we have maybe 80 - 90 % of the meshes already available in current replacers.  Getting those implimented and removing any unsatisfactory ones should be the comparitively easy part.  So, with some time for them to be retextured with some of the awesome visual overhaul textures, maybe several weeks.

Then there would be a long process of slowly creating custom models for the last 10 - 20 % of the meshes.  This would take quite awhile, but I don't really know the timescale involved in creating a mesh, so I'm not going to even try to estimate this one.  :)

Now this is just a thought, but IMO one person in charge wouldn't really work.

I think this because of a few reasons, first and foremost is the workload it would put upon such a person's shoulders. Plus nobody here (I think) is an expert in every area of development.

I think a few people in charge of the various aspects of the project such as: Visuals, Sound, NPCs, Quests etc might be a potential solution.

Either way, I thought things were going well up until now.

My view on the texture/mesh situation is that while I'm not worried about Bethesda coming along and shutting us down and I would play Skywind regardless, I would like to see Skywind with updated models. If people choose to work on new models, good for them! And good for everyone who will be playing Skywind, we can only gain from updated models.

Actually, when you sit back and look at it, we really haven't hit a rut, even with these two camps of whether to use custom meshes or not.

While we might disagree on these meshes, we pretty much agree on everything else, and that is we gotta get quests, NPCs, lighting, etc done. The meshes can always be changed to the players liking later down the road, so no big deal. The rest of us should focus on stuff that we absolutely need like NPCs, quests, creatures, working chests, etc.

Just my thoughts on the situation. Again, I'm a full time computer engineer major. I have 0% social life. I have just barely enough time to check this site and give my input and advice. I wish so much I could help right now, and I will during the breaks. I'm even thinking about auditing a 3D modeling class up here next semester.

But I'm with the camp of using new meshes/textures as long as they closely resemble the originals! Again, look to Phitt's Sheogorad project, amazing models that look nearly like the originals.

There are many good reasons why I am mainly for finding/developing better tools for NIF conversion.

First, we can avoid most of the legal issues regarding hosting assets from various bethesda games.

You can avoid having to host any of the assets, with a app/tool that can do the installation easily(aside from downloading esm/custom content)

Finally, what happens after morrowind? Are we really thinking about recreating everything in oblivion? What happens after skyrim?

You need to have a starting point. Everything you want to improve on, like custom meshes/textures can be done later.

That was my original thought on morroblivion when I first found galladrielles converter years ago.

Also, I am not in any way opposed of recreated or improving original assets, I just think time can be better spend finishing the master file first.

I agree Machine, let`s just get it all finished, then both camps can if needed change things.

It will be better when skyrim.esm dependent sfuff can be merged [the VC tool refuses to do it],hoping that tesvgecko gets completed soon.

I need a tool that can safely make our master dependent on skyrim.esm, but at this time after extensive tweaking etc it still can`t be done.

Have not given up yet though.:)

If I had to pick 2 people to lead the development of skywind it would be eloth and clint. Just my opinion :))

Torondiir:

Yes! This is what i envision :D This is what i want to create :)

Heh, maybe you can make Red Mountain a bit bigger? Since you know, Red Mountain is actually supposed to be taller than the Throat of the World. =p I don't know if that'll make the last quest of the main quest a bit more annoying or not.

I love Eloth's new lighthouse.

I agree with Clint's Statements on 'legality'.

I think Anruin's got a point with selecting a leader or two. And he's done a ton of work for this project(as has Clint and Eloth), so their words should carry weight.

I vote Clint and Eloth being the Skywind Leads.

David has always been the Morroblivion Lead. (And right under him Thermador and Eloth, according to my opinion).

Those screenshots/ concept art of Torondiir are awesome. Are they from ESO?

Of course not, you'd have to be crazy to think ESO will actually look like that. They're from an ES fans deviantart page.

I personally like the guy on the second row from the front on the far left. Right behind the lady that has the crazy shirt.
