[WIP] Morrowind Warpaints in Skywind

To increase the immersion of Skywind, I've started to import the Morrowind warpaints to Skywind! :)

[External image]

At the moment this adds 18 warpaints (9 male/9female) of Morrowind, for 3 races: nord, orc and dark elf. I want to point out that these are not my textures, Xenius made them for this mod, and gave us the authorisation to use them. The mod is composed of an esm and the warpaint textures. I also wanted to try to convert the hair styles, but for this you need 3ds max, which I don't have... :(

So all the warpaints work in the CK, so it's more a modder ressource: I added to the different race their wp, and they show up just fine in the creation kit

BUT the reason why I "release" this while it's not 100% finished, is because I'm stuck and need help/testing. In fact, when you want to add a warpaint to an existant Npc (vanilla skyrim) it works GREAT. But then if you want to add them to a custom Npc (skywind's), it doesn't ! At least for me; it's not the same method at all and apparently the reason why it doesn't work is because my ck may be broke ! :( I'm gonna explain the two methods, so if one of you could try and tell me if it works for him,we will see ;)

How to add warpaint to vanilla Npc

  1. First, download my files, and then open "Warpaints.esm" in the creation kit (his masters are skyrim and skywind).
  2. Then, find the Npc you want to edit, for example Lydia (note that these warpaints work only with nords, dark elf and orc). On the "Character Gen Parts", scroll down to find the morrowind warpaints, and add interpolation value to see how it is. When done, press Ok.
  3. Now, be sure to be on the Actor tab on the left part of the CK (if you are on "All*" it WON'T work), highlight the edited npc (here Lydia) and press Ctrl+F4 and say yes when asked. Wait a second, and a box will appear saying done: this will create two files, <id npc>.dds and the same .tga. The game will read the texture and replace the vanilla one.

If the "Done" box appear immediately and nothing is created under textures/actors/character/FaceGenData/FaceTint/<master of the edited npc> then re-edit the npc, and uncheck "IsCharGen Face Preset",it will now work.

Keep in mind that you don't need any esp, the dds and the tga are enough.

How to add warpaint to Skywind Npc

Prepare yourself, it's not going to be easy ;)

So for this, repeat the same steps as previously, but the Ctrl+F4 thing won't work this time. You need to :

  1. Save your modification (create the esp with the ck)
  2. Using wrye bash, convert your newly esp onto an esm
  3. Close the creation kit
  4. Re open it with the new esm, and now the Ctrl+F4 should work.
  5. Delete the original esp from your data folde rand check the esm on your skyrim laucher.

Now this didn't worked for me, but it's probably because my ck is broke... So if you can try, we will see! :)

How to add warpaints/continue this mod

Alright, tonight is my last evening on holiday, so I don't think I'll manage to work some more on this... Plus I've never played Morrowind so I don't have any idea how the warpaints look like  :p Btw, I couldn't find them on the morrowind bsa, where the hell are they ??

If anybody wants to continue to add new warpaint, I will explain how to now.

The texture

For making the texture you will need:

Now open one of my texture in photoshop (click ok when the box appears), fill the square with black, and put your new texture in white. When you're done, "Save as", find a new name and a new box will show up. Be sure to select "8.8.8   RGB 24 bpp unsigned" with no mip map, like this:

  In the Creation Kit

In the CK, edit the race that you want to add the warpaint and in the "Tinting" tab, in the big box on the left, Right click, "New". Click on Choose texture, and choose Paint on the Mask Type. And you're done ! :)

Alright, so I hope this will help you, especially the Npc's team! ;)

Thanks! :) Well, I don't know if they are 3d models or just textures, but it'll be definitely easier if they work like the face tint... ;)

Also, you started a few months ago to convert the hair style in oblivion right ? So, how hard is it ? :P

We didn't actually start.  But I think it is a really good idea, and we know it is possible.

i started to convert hair from morrowind to morroblivion a couple of years ago :)

But for skywind, i think we need to use those as reference and model new ones instead :)

Yeah, it's what I was thinking too, unfortunately I just have basic knowledge in 3D modeling, but maybe I can grab a friend to the project, pretty sure he can do this ;) If he say yes obviously...

I still really want to see Oblivion hair converted over though......

Great! Hope we can figure it out (no idea whatsoever, sorry)

Thank you! :) Sorry but I don't understand, figure out what? ;)

I mean figure out how to put that on Skywind's NPCs... Or maybe I misread.

No no, you're right, I don't know what to do... :( I've searched everywhere on internet, there are solutions that work for some people, but not for me :/

Anyway, I was thinking about the earrings; in Morrowind how does it work? I mean, all the darks elves wear the same earrings ? If so, I think you can edit the race's meshes, and it will apply this to every dark elves... And those of skyrim too then, but I think it's nota big deal ;)

Edit: oh and I'm actually looking for some tatoo'ed guys's pictures on morrowind, so I can continue making new texture :) So far can't find any on uesp...

The warpaints yeah, made a thread about them before and made my own but never got around releasing, go figures.

Thank you! :) Your textures look nice.

Mine are Xenius's, and actually I just find an hour ago the localization of the warpaints in the Morrowind.bsa; and actually it seems that xenius just copy past them, so I think they're pretty accurate ;) And I figured out they're all here, so don't need to do more textures...

Did you ever managed to get them working on Skywind's npc ?

I know but I think Xenius' warpaints are far too thick, the round orc warpaint is also very inaccurate, it's placed around the eye when it should be on his cheek.

He also didn't do the one I call organized messed pile of paint.

And those are not NPCs, that's the normal character creation in skyrim.

And I have no idea what you mean by "actually it seems that xenius just copy past them", could you elaborate?

Well given that I never played morrowind, you must be right :)

Okay, mines can be put on any npc, but won't show up with Skywind's.

So basically, here is how Bethesda puts warpaints on Morrowind npcs:

[External image]

I think Xenius just isolated them, increased their size and that's it. What do you think, does it match more whit what you have in head? And what do you call the "organized messed pile of paint"? ;)

Not far from it, but he used them for merely transparent guidelines and painted over them. That's what I did, it is most efficient that way with the best result.

If you can't bother looking at the image I posted to see which one he didn't make, then so be it.

And I do know how they were in morrowind, I was modding the game long before skyrim was announced.

yeah Cor i see what you mean,  yours is 100 times better :)

Ok get it :) So maybe you could send me your textures and I'll replace them if they are more accurate. ;)
