She's got a good voice.  You will definitely want a better mic set up, something with a pop filter, or at least record without facing the mic directly.  I thought the accent was good for Nords, not for the Dunmer, though.  Have to hear from Langonfor the final word though.

Thanks man, we would definitely be getting a decent mic with a pop filter if it has any potential. She would also be willing to work on improving the voice acting once we have the proper equipment.

Here is my shot at the Nord voice:

Bronrod the Roarer

Engar Ice-Mane

Agning

Again, the sound quality is poor, but it's best I could do with the mic I have currently.

Sounds great!  Not really a fault I have with the performance, but the way you've pronounced Barenziah is different from how I have (like bear inns eye yah).  I remember asking in the chat what way I should pronounce her name when I got there, as I was a bit lost, too.  I wonder if we should get a consensus for the 'proper' way to say important character names at least?

So far I've talked with Langotriel, but I wanted to show it to more people. My accent unfortunately makes it hard to work on other races than those two :(

Please tell me what do you think

I liked the first sample, ...

I realised I should check if Langotriel needs to sign off on the Nord. The 'R's are not very rolled, which seems to have been a common theme for other Nords! I can do the kind of accent that Langotriel demonstrated, although it sounds a bit Russian (Perhaps in a stereotypical way; I don't know if that's a problem...) or a Scottish accent in which some of the 'R's roll naturally.

Of course if more than one is acceptable then I can record other Nords with them, for more variety.

Here are those accents. One Scottish at my natural pitch, one Scottish lower (no pitch-shifting) and which sounds like the weird Russian hybrids people have been demonstrating :P

http://www.fishface.org.uk/static/stuff/Botrir-accent-tests.mp3

Personally I'd love to see some Yorkshire and Scottish Nords, but see what you think. I still don't have a Dunmer voice that works, unfortunately.

I like the enthusiasm in your reading.  Of these, I liked the Khajiit the best.

You could probably do Bosmer - it's well in your range - but your voice is a bit too much a caricature in its current form.  Bosmer in Morrowind were whiny, but it was a depressed/annoyed/frustrated sort of whininess.  These sound more like the Soda Poppers from the Sam and Max Games, or Cartman.

You might be able to pull off Dunmer, if you give it some work.  Right now too much of your natural voice is coming through.  We're going for a "Jeff Baker" Dunmer, which is really heavy rasp, and almost throat-singing in parts.  Very little of your natural voice should bleed through.

I'm not an expert or anything

I'm not an expert or anything but some obvious things to work on is

1. The sound quality. There is a bit of static in the background. The short audacity tutorial on the first post worked really great for me for getting rid of background noise.

2.It almost sounds like you're reading off of a script. Try to sound more natural.

You can pretty much take you pic of any of the characters in the first post. just pick one you like, find their lines in the excel sheet (found in the second post), then read some lines and post them here!

Good luck! =)

stijmunkey,

stijmunkey,

As discussed in my other topic, there are some wavs and mp3s in the morroblivion voice acting mod that you said must not have converted correctly. You said you wanted to clean those up and add some new voices for the next release.

Any idea when that would be? Or maybe you can tell us what you are using to convert them and we can make the bsa's ourselves, assuming that would make those parts of the mod work.

I have to say, I really don't agree with this direction. It seems you want every character of every race to sound exactly the same. I can't agree with that. A big problem with the Elder Scrolls games was their lack of variation in voice actors, having too many characters sound exactly the same. Many critics and fans hammered them on this point, and rightfully so. That is definitely not something we should try to emulate.

You say my voice should sound more depressed and annoyed for Bosmer... but not all Bosmer are depressed or annoyed. It makes sense to have some characters sound like that, but some not. Each Bosmer is a different person, not to mention each person sounds different when they are annoyed. For example, my Aengoth was annoyed during plenty of those lines I read, and you could really tell. I guess you just want him to sound... more boring? More like... everyone else? More "normal?" But "normal" is lame, especially when everyone's doing it.

You also say you're going for more "Jeff Baker" Dunmer. Well, Jeff Baker sounds like Jeff Baker. There's literally hundreds of Dunmer in the game. Do you want them all to sound exactly like Jeff Baker? Again, that's a really bad idea. They should sound like individual characters, different from one another. Because... they are.

I was hoping for some feedback along the lines of what lines I should redo, if I screwed up on pronunciation, if my character voice didn't fit the characters personality enough, if the audio quality wasn't good enough, etc. But it seems all you're offering is "stop being creative, be more normal like everyone else."  That's pretty much the opposite of what acting is. Which is not something I can get behind.

I would love to do voiceover work for this, but I can't agree with any of that criticism, and I'm not going to re-record these lines just to make them more unoriginal and boring. I hope you guys can use what I have recorded.

Dunmer should all have the

Dunmer should all have the same raspy-style voice, in my opinion, but that doesn't mean they should sound alike. Seriously, listen to some of the different Dunmer voices people have been submitting - do they all sound the same? Do they really all sound like Jeff Baker? Equally, I don't get the criticism about your Dunmer voice - the guy doing Sul-Matuul and Athyn Sarethi, for example, is voicing him in the same fashion.

Sorry about that! If Audacity cooperated correctly, this one should be much louder (without blaring your ears off).

And sorry about the long response time. I couldn't find my post!

Re: Variety and Consistency

Re: Variety and Consistency

I wonder if there is a slight overcompensation due to almost all voices in Skyrim being used for all races? I think it makes sense to have an overall theme that everyone in one race sticks to, but making all Bosmer sound annoyed doesn't make sense to me. Likewise, making all Nords sound like monotone Finns seems like a recipe for, well, monotony. With Dunmer it seems a little special because they have to have the raspy quality, which I guess nullifies some variety. But I did see people being advised to "sound more downbeat" I think, for general Dunmer voices; the same principle then applies.

By the way, Nick, there were definitely quite a few pops in your recordings. You'd need to re-record with a pop-filter or aim your mouth slightly away from the mic to get rid of them.

Argh. I've always pronounced it the other way. This is the problem with Bethesda's voice department. There's a lot of discrepancy between pronouncing certain words because some voice actors read their lines differently. In Morrowind for instance, Azura pronounced "Dwemer" like, "dwee-mer," but lots of other characters say "dweh-mer."

It's hard to guess what the "real" pronunciation for these words are because the voice actors can't stay consistent... Now I'm torn. Should I fix those lines or keep them the way they are?

Hi actors,

Hi actors,

Just wanted to pop in again to re-submit my audition for Fast Eddie (originally posted 12/7/2013 - page 31 of the thread). I've seen a few more auditions for him crop up since then, and I'd love to take a crack at the part before it's assigned.

Sadly, I think Fast Eddie's already been taken.  But your voice works very well for 'older sounding' Dunmer!  I think you would do a good job with any remaining Telvanni wizards, or perhaps some of the elder Dunmer in the Great Houses or Ashlands.  You do a good job keeping the 'rasp' but making it seem somehow ancient.

Huh, I'm actually pretty impressed with that Dunmer.  Hoki might work, have to hear from Lango.  Carnius Magius - the lines are read well, but you don't sound intimidating.  You know how all the bad guys who try to beat you to death with a Stalhrim mace in the movies have deep Christopher Lee voices?  You don't have a deep Christopher Lee voice.  Now this might be a bit controversial... but you might want to try pitch alteration and bass amplification.  I'm not sure if your voice will take well to it, and it can easily be overdone, or make your recording sound 'fake', but it can do miraculous things.  It's like doping in the Olympics or something.

Ahh, I get it now. I had an image in my head of Carnius being more of a sniveling aristocrat type. So, I actually did play around with it a bit, and I actually think it turned out pretty well. We'll have to let the forum gods decide. Unfortunately I was cursed with a kiddy-sounding voice, so deep isn't in my natural wheelhouse without sounding forced.

Also, which Dunmer were you referring to? Both? I'd just like to know for further attempts- find a vein to mine. Still trying to find my place, and I'm actually enjoying it immensely. But, again, if there's a particular character or type that anyone thinks I should try reading I welcome the recommendation and will do it.

I really liked Eris Telas's voice, and I think you did a good job deepening Carnius Magius's voice.  You've got a 'clean' sounding voice that works well for imperials when lowered a smidge.

Yes... I think we finally have someone who can help put a dent into the female-Dunmer backlog :D  I'll pass this on.

I'm really struggling to find

I'm really struggling to find the ok'd male Dunmer voices in the thread, does someone have a link to the voices that have been ticked off on, so we can have a comparison? Mostly people seem to be saying "no, raspier! More rasp! More like Jeff Baker!" But Jeff Baker has limited lines that I can find, and is some kind of voice acting god, so could we get some copies of the guys on here that have been judged OK?

The more variation we can hear within the "accepted" category, the easier it is going to be to know what we need to do to emulate it. I say this because sometimes a voice sounds similar to one person's ear, but to someone else a completely different voice sounds similar. We need to know how you want it to be similar without subjective terms like "rasp" (which could be taken to mean "growly", "rough", "gritty", "whispery", "breathy", "fricative", "crackly" or any number of other adjectives).

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I can see where my voice is wrong, but I'm struggling to improve it with just a single point of reference. Otherwise I'll just start belting out Nords and leave the Dunmer to the experts, but that hardly solves the problem of not having enough VOAs for the Dunmer.

Sure, I noticed them on the Assabus Bentus lines and Fargoth - on p's in both cases ("camp" and "imperials") are the first words I noticed pops on.

I would love to do any random

I would love to do any random voice acting that is still needed to be done, preferably female since I'm a girl but I can put on a fairly masculine voice if needed. I use it to mimic my brother, so I've had lots of practice!

My natural voice is very girly though, sometimes I even sound like a small child. So if you need a small child voice I'm here. Also my natural accent is standard British so if that appeals too then let me know.

I've got all the recording equipment so it would be completely fairly quickly. I have no idea if it's all been completed or assigned, so hopefully I don't look too much of an idiot! :D

Well, if you can do a somewhat elderly sounding voice with a slow, contemplative pacing you could try some Dunmer lines.  That's what we have the most need for.  Apsara's second audition one page back was good to go by for the more Imperial-influenced Hlaalu.  Try listening to the elves (any elves) from Oblivion for an idea of what Dunmer from Morrowibd sound like.  The same voice actor in each case.  For the Ashlander type Dunmer, a voice similar to Maya Angelou would be good.
