Hi there, I originally submitted a carnius, but Coltess does a much better job then I ever could. So I thought I'd try my hand at General Darius. I thought I'd keep it cheerful for him:
Sure, I noticed them on the Assabus Bentus lines and Fargoth - on p's in both cases ("camp" and "imperials") are the first words I noticed pops on.
So I was confused about this, because I have a wind screen and was at least a couple feet away from the mic when I recorded. I looked them over and there aren't any pops. I can see why you would think that, though, because I was annunciating quite a lot. I am a theater actor and we are trained to really "pop" our consonants. The sounds you are hearing there aren't mic pops, they are just me annunciating really well.
If you don't think so, take a look at the waveform.
I just did Dovor Oren. Id love to know your opinion, and if I can work with you anytime soon.
A few things - the voice seems a bit feeble for a Dunmer. Not the same as an elderly man's might, but like Marty McFly after getting nearly hanged in Back to the Future. Not quite that extreme perhaps, but it sounds like your voice is strained - not like it's your character's 'natural' voice. There are several clips a few posts above this one with good examples you could try to emulate.
Second, a lot of your 's' sounds are very sharp. There's one in that first bit that's piercing. It's good to do each line a few times and listen back to them to make sure you're not getting any really sharp s or p sounds. If you just have a loud S and want to reduce it, Langotriel has a video that shows you how on the first page of this thread.
Third, it sounds like you may be too far back from the microphone, at times. Make sure you're only 6-8 inches away with your mouth facing away from, not directly into, the mic.
Lastly, I hear a few parts that could be smoothed out with normalization and compression. The volume of these clips varies, and a few points where the voice is loud enough to cause distortion (...more than enough, outlander).
Langotriel might be able to offer some more feedback on the quality end. Keep at it!

I want any/all criticism you guys have to give me! Thanks!
Youve got a voice that I think could do Imperials quite well, but you need to really own this part. Imperials have a commanding personality anyway, and you are a General. You are a badass in Templar armor. You are the one they put in charge of a unit of ORCS. He is also the first Imperial the green legionaries will receive quests from, so at this point, they really are the proverbial 'maggots'. I'm not saying you have to be a drill sergeant stereotype (though you could be), but you need to make sure your voice carries all the authority you can muster, and that it just exudes the confidence of a man who 'doesn't have time for your sass'.
As for the Dunmer, you're going about it the wrong way. That's the voice of Dr. Claw from Inspector Gadget, only not as clear and deep. Listen to the samples linked earlier for some good ideas on how to get that raspy sound without it sounding too forced.

I can't seem to see the waveform (well, not at the required level of zoom!) on soundcloud. In any case, I'd have thought it's the sound that counts and it sounds like there's too much 'p' to me! Anyways I'm in no way giving an official opinion here - just trying to pitch in since you didn't get any comments on recording quality. Hopefully someone with an official opinion will give the final word either way...
Hi, was there any sort of consensus about whether or not pitch modification was acceptable? Because I've tinkered a bit, and I have a few that I'd actually like to put out as serious auditions. One of which, Carnius Magius, I showed how I modified earlier, however I've touched up the voice a bit since then and would like to seriously audition with it and a few others.

Damn, son! Bottle that Carnius Magius up and you could make gangbusters! But yeah, if you did some editry on his voice, I think it sounds pretty good. There's something odd that too much editing can do that makes esses seem 'off', but I'll leave it to Lango to decide if it will be an issue in this case.
I still think your Eris is great. Mervis sounds a bit like Carth from Knights of the Old Republic - or Mass Effect, I can't remember which. Try for something a bit more like Eris. I've posted several links to other Dunmer voice actors' work a few posts above.
Pretty sure Lord Cluttermonkey's not getting put in
As for Snorri and Hoki, I think Lango will say they need some work. He wants the Nords to come across as Old Norse (not just modern-day Scandies). I, myself, suck at the 'r' sounds. But if you can, here's a good video detailing what Old Norse sounds like.

So I tried real quick on another Darius voice, since you liked the voice I kept it and tried to make it more of a serious tone. It's a little higher then my actual speaking voice, but I hope it's commanding enough. If not, let me know.

Okey dokey. I won't be in the studio again until Friday, but I'll do an entire fresh start with Mervis and, if I can get a Nord down, give that a go.
So what are people using for pitch modification, anyway? What techniques to people find useful? I'm happy to give it a try :)
P.S. Thanks heaps for those examples Smitehammer, I'll have another crack at the voice tomorrow. (And maybe run through a nord or two...). I'm really keen to get some actual solid recordings done.

Busy Busy Busy.
I just lowered the pitch in Audacity, and added a bit of 'bass' to it for my Orc and Redguard. The Redguard was lowered 13%, with 5 or 6 added 'bass' - but this was close to the acceptable limit. I'd say you could be pretty safe from the shushishesses up to 6-8% lowering. Just depends. Not all voices take well to artificial lowering though.
Another attempt down. I think I've managed to removes the remaining echo with event more pillows and blankets. If there is still a problem with the sound I could use a few pointers. I've also tried to make it sound less Brooklyn-ee and deepened it a bit. I think it's at a point where i could imagine hearing it from an imperial but it's not my opinion that counts haha. If it's not what your after perhaps you could provide a bit of direction of where i should push it?
I've gone ahead and separated them into the proper files with the required name (pretty much just to get the hang of it.
Just wanted to pop in again to re-submit my audition for Fast Eddie (originally posted 12/7/2013 - page 31 of the thread). I've seen a few more auditions for him crop up since then, and I'd love to take a crack at the part before it's assigned.
agreed with smite, ill be happy to assign you to any older dunmer
Ok dudes, I've been trying to tweak the throat of the Dunmer a little, and I've had a listen to Jeff Baker's stuff, am I getting close with any of these samples (slightly different throat shapes for these 3)? All on the same 3 Angharadhel lines
Edit: Upload broke
1st and 2nd sample were good, voice needs to be a tad lower though
As discussed in my other topic, there are some wavs and mp3s in the morroblivion voice acting mod that you said must not have converted correctly. You said you wanted to clean those up and add some new voices for the next release.
Any idea when that would be? Or maybe you can tell us what you are using to convert them and we can make the bsa's ourselves, assuming that would make those parts of the mod work.
I use switchsound file converter, timeline would be after i get my internet back! In a week or so then I can start working on it
ya thats the voice i like maybe not for snorri though lol
Is that one you'd like me to work a bit more on or supply more readings for? I'm more than willing to take on the task of voicing a character if those in charge believe my readings are good enough. I'll be in the studio again this Friday, would you like me to supply some more readings for Snorri?
Hey folks, popping by with another bunch of auditions. This time I read for Carnius Magius, Hoki, Mervis, and Eris Telas.
I hope one of these will work, even if it is just one of the single line guys.
Again, if anyone thinks I'd be better voicing a different character, please, by all means tell me.
Huh, I'm actually pretty impressed with that Dunmer. Hoki might work, have to hear from Lango. Carnius Magius - the lines are read well, but you don't sound intimidating. You know how all the bad guys who try to beat you to death with a Stalhrim mace in the movies have deep Christopher Lee voices? You don't have a deep Christopher Lee voice. Now this might be a bit controversial... but you might want to try pitch alteration and bass amplification. I'm not sure if your voice will take well to it, and it can easily be overdone, or make your recording sound 'fake', but it can do miraculous things. It's like doping in the Olympics or something.
Ahh, I get it now. I had an image in my head of Carnius being more of a sniveling aristocrat type. So, I actually did play around with it a bit, and I actually think it turned out pretty well. We'll have to let the forum gods decide. Unfortunately I was cursed with a kiddy-sounding voice, so deep isn't in my natural wheelhouse without sounding forced.
Also, which Dunmer were you referring to? Both? I'd just like to know for further attempts- find a vein to mine. Still trying to find my place, and I'm actually enjoying it immensely. But, again, if there's a particular character or type that anyone thinks I should try reading I welcome the recommendation and will do it.
Hello. I don't know if these have been done yet, but here are lines from the Imperial Benunius Agrudilius and the Dremora Anhaedra. Let me know what you think.
I'm really struggling to find the ok'd male Dunmer voices in the thread, does someone have a link to the voices that have been ticked off on, so we can have a comparison? Mostly people seem to be saying "no, raspier! More rasp! More like Jeff Baker!" But Jeff Baker has limited lines that I can find, and is some kind of voice acting god, so could we get some copies of the guys on here that have been judged OK?
The more variation we can hear within the "accepted" category, the easier it is going to be to know what we need to do to emulate it. I say this because sometimes a voice sounds similar to one person's ear, but to someone else a completely different voice sounds similar. We need to know how you want it to be similar without subjective terms like "rasp" (which could be taken to mean "growly", "rough", "gritty", "whispery", "breathy", "fricative", "crackly" or any number of other adjectives).
I guess what I'm trying to say is that I can see where my voice is wrong, but I'm struggling to improve it with just a single point of reference. Otherwise I'll just start belting out Nords and leave the Dunmer to the experts, but that hardly solves the problem of not having enough VOAs for the Dunmer.
Hi there, I originally submitted a carnius, but Coltess does a much better job then I ever could. So I thought I'd try my hand at General Darius. I thought I'd keep it cheerful for him:
I definitely think my voice best suits the Bosmer. I can always re-record things if they aren't satisfactory. Let me know what ya'll think!
Ok So bosmer were quite good, lol hint of cartman in that first one, dont be afraid to go a little kermit the frog either lol.
Agreed with idontknow. . the assabus was the best dunmer and in my opinion close enough to what we need!
For the variation, we do infact want some variation but due to limitations in the dialogue set up many characters will share the same general of misc lines from the same actor while his unique lines may be done from a different actor so alas we do need to have them sound at least a bit similar, so variation is good but we cant stray too far. . .
And finally if that is just you annunciating too clearly then you will have to tone it down in future recordings as in game it will simply sound like a pop
How about ask Michael Kirkbride or Todd Howard to voice over one of the characters in Skywind? Doesn't really matter if people recognize their voices (I've never heard MK speaking), ppl just need to know they're there... Damn, those could even be a new characters created specially for them. Sort of a walking Eastern Egg
Again, just incase it helps with ideas of who I should try for ^_^
Your Hermaeus Mora cracked me up! I think you've got a very nice voice - and a malleable one. I want to see this malleability put to the test... What we need most of all, are women who can do Dunmer voices. Some of your voices in the 'Skyrim' audition (as well as Namira and Nocturnal) have a nice maturity to them that could make for wonderful Dunmer with some work. The Dunmer in Morrowind were voiced by Linda Kenyon, who is herself elderly. She also voices ALL the elves in Oblivion, so you can listen to lines from that game for an idea of what to emulate.
I notice she is very articulate when she speaks - slow and deliberate. Her voice is clear and commanding with a slight quaver that marks her characters as assertive and wise beyond years. It is difficult to combine these aspects in a voice, but it perfectly encapsulates the essence of the Dunmeri wise woman. Your voice should have a thoughtful and slow rhythm to it, don't rush it. Maya Angelou has the perfect rhythm for an Ashlander wise-woman. Dunmer women are dour, but passionate. Their anger is a righteous one, with the power of ages behind it. A good inspiration for 'angry' Dunmer would be Storm from the X-men annimated series (not Halle Berry).
It might be tough to nail it down, but if you can pull off a crisp-quaverly mature voice aged with wisdom - you will be the queen of kudos! And I'm sure we can find you some really great lines ;)
It's tricky, I've been trying to work on it for a while, and I'm NOT a professional. LOL But I can listen to Maya Angelou for hours, so "researching" the voice type for this is rather pleasant. :D
It's probably why I don't have more work finished.
Well, that and the cold I'm still fighting off. But still.
I definitely think my voice best suits the Bosmer. I can always re-record things if they aren't satisfactory. Let me know what ya'll think!

I've posted before, and gotten great feedback from some of you. Here goes an official audition for the Nord Botrir. Critical feedback is welcome as always :)

Just a quick heads up/update, I've just had a quick conversation with Michael Kirkbride about some voice direction for some more important npcs like Vivec. I will be emailing him later as he would like to run some ideas past me about this topic. So for now I will leave Vivec and the rest of the tribunal plus probably the deadric prince's unassigned till we hash out a good lore friendly sound for their voices!
Hi guys, I'm a bit new to the process, but I'd really like to do some voice work. I haven't played much of the games but I've seen a little and got a chance to try out the intros to Morrowind and Skyrim. I had to do some research on the character races, so I don't know if they are quite right but I picked out a few to experiment. The sound quality is not ideal on some of the clips because I'm learning as I go, but I've got a Shure pg42 microphone with Audacity software and I recently received an offer of help from a friend, so I should improve. I'm always open to advice and suggestions.
I saw that you need a lot of Dunmer so I made an attempt but altered the pitch a wee bit to deepen my voice a little. I could turn the acting up a notch on some of them as well, I just didn't want to overdo it. Also, if you have any other ideas for characters I would be better suited to, I'd be happy to try them out.
I think it would be fun if there are any 'couples' with good voices out there who could sync their voices together for Vivec, so his voice would have the two-tone male/female. Alternatively, a man or woman could do the voice and pitch correct lower at the same time (similar to what I tried for dremora). I would imagine women's voices lowering would sound better than the opposite.
I've posted before, and gotten great feedback from some of you. Here goes an official audition for the Nord Botrir. Critical feedback is welcome as always :)
I really like the quality of the voice, a nice deep Old Norse. This particular line is said when the player refuses to give the axe back to the Nord after taking it back from the witch who stole it - an attack on the player is imminent. So be angry!

But still.

Ok I can do that. If you want me to record some misc. lines or sounds or anything let me know! That could be a lot of fun. I would love to record combat sounds and stuff.
So I wanted to try out the pitch-shifting, how are these 2? They are both shifted down 1 semitone
Thinking about trying out Dunmer Male or possibly Vivec, will try out some recordings, and post them here...
I've posted before, and gotten great feedback from some of you. Here goes an official audition for the Nord Botrir. Critical feedback is welcome as always :)

(I hope this link works.)
Thanks! =)

I really like the quality of the voice, a nice deep Old Norse. This particular line is said when the player refuses to give the axe back to the Nord after taking it back from the witch who stole it - an attack on the player is imminent. So be angry!
