Voice acting sharing across TES

Submitted by NathanielRHamrick on

From what I understand, a lot of the voice acting for most of the morrowind dialogue (rewritten, of course) has been completed.

A lot of people still play morrowind using TES III engine.

I'll cut to the chase. Would the people of the TES renewal project be willing to allow the TES3 modding community to have the voice acting so that the modders of TES3 can make morrowind voice acted as well?

Afterall, so much work is being done over here in terms of voice acting, work that really could never have been completed for morrowind because by the time computer microphone home-setups became more widely available, oblivion was already out and the morrowind community was drifting from the game. Another afterall: the two communities are modding communities and modding communities love sharing.

Russian modders popped out this thing called Talky Morrowind which is great but the voices are mechanical and russian. Mechanical english voices aren't much better. So what do you think? TES Renewal voice actors can share the love or is it just asking for too much? TES3 modders would be more than willing to rewrite TES3 in-game dialogue to fit any re-writes your actors play, I'm quite sure.

I've already mentioned this to a few people at TES3 and everyone I told about it got excited about your project and possibly future TES3 work with the voice acting.

As for writers and making SkyWind less generic for the voice actors, there are Less Generic NPC mods already made for morrowind, so we can ask TES3 modders about sharing their ideas with SkyWind in trade for the beautiful voice acting by your actors. It's a possible win-win, but you guys have more spunk in terms of fresh ideas, although looking at the less generic NPC mods for morrowind might be worth a shot to see if anything sparks.

I'm not an important player in any communities but I'll make a great messenger boy.

Everything in the voice department needs to be re-recorded, since there has been some issues with the scripts. This means that nothing is really done at the moment. Much like any other items on this website, they belong to the creators who made the recordings, and would require everyone who recorded them to accept them being used in relation to other mods.(Lango and Smite are probably better qualified to answer this question, and please correct me if I am wrong guys!)

It is a very touchy matter. It is impossible for us to say yes seeing as the recordings belong to the recorders. Some of the voice actors are real professionals that want the voices for their reels and we can't afford to act in a way that will make them go elsewhere. We don't have time to ask every single voice actor either and sort the voices of who is ok with it and who isn't.

on the other hand... We can't stop you from just taking the files either :P sooo... yeah. but that would be a scum move.. but if you don't, someone will.

I doubt its a touchy subject, it's all Morrowind after all. Its not like they care if their voices get enjoyed in Skywind or Morrowind. But the sticking point is actually to get the full set of dialog, which is going to be a long time coming still.

I have already talked to voice actors about it. Some are fine with it and others dislike the idea of their work being used for other projects. It might not seem like it to you but a lot of people care... I cannot give permission for others to use the voicework of our voice actors.

The ToS says this:

The morrowind modding community is extremely touchy and respectful of the wishes of content-creators.

I doubt anyone from the TESIII modding community will work with stuff that the owner doesn't want them to work with. I know it sounds hard to believe, but I'm quite sure of it. I just saw the community bash another guy the other day for taking sounds without permissions.

They'll do the same for anyone who steals voices. I'd be more than willing to do the individual requesting. No skin off my back. Great information you've all shared. Thank you.

@Isakar The TOS is irrelevant because most will upload their final pieces elsewhere. They will either pass it directly to me through email or using some kind of upload service. Another thing people do is upload elsewhere (soundcloud etc) and post a link on the site which means that the TOS does not apply to it either. THEN there are complicated matters with some where they are not the direct owners of the clips because they are part of some kind of union that they are tied to so even when they upload it, they don't have the full rights to it themselves and so they don't have the authority to give out licenses... so yeah.... The TOS says what it says but rarely applies to voice acting.

@ NathanielRhamrick

Cool beans i suppose.. but you would need to come into contact with them all :P you would need to know exactly who is doing voice acting which only Smitehammer and I would know.. so that would require us to give you the names of (hopefully, eventually) around 200 voice actors... :/ We will see what we can do... it will be a while before it is all done anyway.

One thing you should know is that some of the script changes are a little extreme and they change how the core game dialogue worked... minor parts are removed, some people don't say what they used to and other say a whole lot more... then there are extra added characters... and then there is idle banter on top of that... we are talking a lot of changes... it has taken us months to adjust for the changes we are making so I would think that anyone wanting to use the VA would have to do the same.
