Dunmer Ancestor Worship

Submitted by MPBunny on

So I had an idea on a little minor bit I could do. It goes like this:

You as the character are doing dungeon diving as usual. You go through a tomb, looting left and right, and leave. A few days later some thugs or assassins show up and try to murder you on behalf of the clan whose tomb you desecrated. Since Dunmer love their ancestors.

Theoretically this should be simple: The radiant system of 'steal from person, person hires thugs' already exists in Skyrim, so it should just be a matter of applying ownership of the burial urns' contents to an NPC, and then create about six random NPC thugs to choose from that will show up and attack you.

The question I have though, is do the Dunmer visit their tombs on Vvardenfell? Initially I thought yes, before lore-reading made me question it, since the island has been only open for a few decades. Perhaps they don't? I mean obviously not in the case of the Daedra-infested tombs or the ones deep inside the volcanic regions, but what about ones like Sarano Ancestral Tomb, just off the beaten path?

Also, who would be sending the assassins? My idea was that the note would specify "on behalf of the ____ Clan" for sending the attackers (so-as to not need to create a named NPC, or just an NPC named 'the ____ Clan'), but which group? I was thinking it would be either the Morag Tong, Temple, a new group focused on preservation of remains, or just the NPC himself.

I don't want to use the Morag Tong or Temple (despite them fitting), since I can't think of why they would send an assassin or Ordinator after you and yet not kick you out, and adding a new organization (which would be based on the mainland to avoid new areas) would be outside lore. And having the NPC himself send the thugs feels too Skyrim-y to me. Plus, why would they just send thugs once? You violated their clan's remains and are still alive. Keep sending people until this is rectified.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

I think you should bring this idea to the Random Events thread. You could write up a script for those encounters and present them. That particular side of Skywind is still heavily in the conception process, although it is likely going to be based on Skyrim's existing scenes. Give it a shot!

For some reason I thought that thread to be about stuff that you encounter on the roads or wilderness than something triggered. Alright then.

So is it a script in the sense of a play, or a script as in modding? Because at this point I can only do one of those.

As i said already, it would be good to have some NPC-visitors in Ancestor tombs.
Maybe even with week routine for most of relevant NPC.

It can be used in some assasination quests if you know target NPC's routine.

Here is a thought; would they be hostile if they see you in their ancestor's tomb. If so, that allows for hired thugs/ morag tong/ camonna tong to "teach you a lesson"

The first time a group of hired thugs approached me in Skyrim I killed them, then afterwards I searched their bodies and found a note on the one bandit, claiming that the thief, "Dragonborn" should be taught a lesson- As written from a man named "Orgnar". Honestly I have no idea who Orgnar was, and I can't even remember the item I stole. And this happened several times after the first encounter. I can't say that I felt any specific personal type of relation to the people who wanted me dead. My opinion to you is; If you want to add this type of content to a game, make sure you relate it to something big and to a character or group which truly makes an impression to the player. I don't want to see a group of thugs just because I stole some crafting materials from a blacksmith. I want to see a group of invisible assassins with bows and daggers approaching me and blaming me for assassinating the Emperor (Just an extreme example, but you get it). Conclusion: Relate hired killers to powerful and unique groups, and give them character, make them more striking and less frequent.

Both House Hlaalu and House Telvanni would be willing to send assassins after you if you toed out of line.

Hlaalu would likely hire the Camonna Tong or Dark Brotherhood, Telvanni wizards may use the Camonna Tong, but then again, they may come after you themselves. House Redoran, obsessed with nobility, would definitely send their own to mess you up.

Something to consider in the Great House storylines.

Yep. Maybe this should be relate to quantity of dunmers in tomb.

Actually - having SOOOOO many NPCs in Morrowind, why not sacrifice some of them. I mean - if you have tomb of family X and there is NPC that belongs to that family X, why wouldn't he try to kill you. There are a lot of npcs that don't do much, so we have some to spare most likely.

So you stole few thing from few tombs, big deal eh? You actually don't even remember all those names and such. At some point dunmer approaches you. With his voice cracking he calls you N'wah, he tells you how you desecrated his family tomb. For you it was just SOME loot. For him it was all that matters, now he will have his revenge.

Well obviously it doesn't end well for him when he rushes at you, trying to penetrate your daedric armour with chitin dagger but hey...

= yep. This is precise it. People like it when intentions are visible and reason causes a consequence.
