Converting Tamriel Rebuilt v21.01 for Morroblivion
Description:
This tutorial will take you step-by-step through the process of using ModExporter to convert Tamriel Rebuilt to the latest version of Morroblivion, at the time of writing Tamriel Rebuilt is 21.01 and Morroblivion is v66.
What is ModExporter?
ModExporter is a modified version of OpenMW-CS which allows users to load Morrowind ESP/ESM-based mods and then export them into a format that is compatible with Oblivion. It will then search for custom mesh/texture asset files and export them to a compatible format as well. Any original Morrowind assets from the retail game including DLC will not be exported to Morroblivion. Instead, most of these dependencies will be redirected to an alternative Oblivion or Morroblivion-made asset. ModExporter doesn't do a 100% perfect conversion of Tamriel Rebuilt yet. However, many simple fetch quests will work out-of-the-box, more complex quests will need custom script modifications to work in Morroblivion.
Initial Requirements:
- Morrowind GOTY
- Oblivion GOTY
- Tamriel Data 8.0 for Morroblivion
- Tamriel Rebuilt 21.01
- Latest Morroblivion
- OpenMW 0.45 (64-bit)
- ModExporter 2020-June-29
- GIMP 2.8.22 (64 bit)
- GIMP DDS plugin (64-bit)
- GIMP Normalmap plugin (64-bit)
- Python 2.6.6 (32 bit)
- Blender 2.49b (32 bit)
- PyFFi 2.1.11 (32 bit)
- Blender NIF Scripts 2.5.9
- v066 Mods-for-ModExporter 2022-Jan-08
Installation and Preparation
Note: This step should take about 10-20 minutes.
Expand
1. Install Morrowind GOTY and Tamriel Rebuilt with their requirements
TIP: Do not forget to register the BSA files by adding the following lines to the [Archives] section of the Morrowind.ini file.
- Archive 2=PT_Data.bsa
- Archive 3=TR_Data.bsa
Your able to add other BSA archives this way to, use ; to comment out other lines.
How to install OpenMW 0.45
Expand
Notice: You MUST use version 0.45 of OpenMW, instead of a later version.
You should install OpenMW into "C:\OpenMW 0.45" instead of the default directory, setup OpenMW per instructed, don't forget too import the Morrowind Settings otherwise OpenMW can't use the Tamriel Rebuilt mod.
TIP: You can use this version of OpenMW separately from any other version. If the Import Morrowind Settings wizard does not run, then you should click the "Run Installation Wizard" button on the Settings tab of the OpenMW Launcher. Select your master file, which is the Morrowind.esm found in the "Morrowind\Data Files\" folder.
Requiring Oblivion and Morroblivion
Notice: Oblivion and Morroblivion should already be installed with all their requirements, per the Requirements on this page, If you make it here and are not sure, I advise to reread everything.
Installing GIMP and the GIMP Plugins
Expand
GIMP should be installed to "C:\GIMP28" instead of the default "Program Files" folder, Then install the GIMP plugin EXE files to "C:\GIMP28\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins"; this includes,
- normalmap.exe
- dds.exe
The Normalmap plugin
The normalmap plugin archive contains 3 DLLs files as followed:
- glew32.dll
- libgdkglext-win32-1.0-0.dll
- libgtkglext-win32-1.0-0.dll
All 3 DLLs should be moved to the "C:\GIMP28\bin" folder. Make sure you can start GIMP and open a DDS file before moving on to the next section.
Installing Blender and PyFFi files.
Expand
Install Python 2.6.6 (32-bit) before anything else. Let it install in "C:\Python26" then continue to install Blender 2.49b into "C:\Blender249b".
Blender TIP: Make sure you select "Use the installation directory (ie location chosen to install blender.exe)" when asked where you wish to install Blender's user data files. If you chose something else, then you will have to uninstall Blender and start over.
Install PyFFi 2.1.11, the installer will automatically detect Python 2.6 and Blender folders. The installation folder for the PyFFi files is not important. Finally, install the Blender NIF Scripts, again, the install will automatically detect the blender folders.
Installing ModExporter
Notice: The latest version is dated 2020, as of Sept 2022.
Expand
Extract the contents of the ModExporter archive into the OpenMW 0.45 root directory. Then run "start modexporter.bat" file found in the root directory of OpenMW, When you run it for the first time, you'll see the message "Creating "settings.bat file..." When you see this message "Press any key to continue..." then immediately close the window by pressing the "X" in the upper right corner.
Now back to the root directory of OpenMW you'll find "settings.bat" this file was generated in the previous section, right-click and select Edit, modify the following lines to point to PYTHONEXE, GIMPEXE and BLENDEREXE
Python 2.6.6 ("C:\Python26\python.exe")
GIMP 2.8.22 ("C:\GIMP28\bin\gimp-console-2.8.exe")
Blender 2.49b ("C:\Blender249b\blender.exe")
TIP: If you have atleast 10GB of disk space on your C: drive you can leave the MODEXPORTER_OUTPUTROOT line alone, This will place the Resources generated by ModExporter in "C:\Oblivion.output".
If you would like to use another hard drive, then you can change the drive letter from "C:" to something else like "D:". The "Oblivion.output" will automatically be added on and is hardcoded into the scripts, You can not change it.
Now open the Morroblivion.ini file located in your OpenMW root directory. Change the Morrowind line to point to your installation folder for Morrowind, make sure you put "\" at the end of the folder name.
TIP: The Oblivion line is actually the destination folder for output files and not the actual game folder. This must be the drive letter you chose in the "settings.bat" file plus the string "\Oblivion.output\" an example: "C:\Oblivion.output\" or "D:\Oblivion.output\". If you try to name it something else then you will break the Mesh processing stage.
Now create the destination folder that you specified in the above step: "C:\Oblivion.output\" then within this folder, create another named "Data". If these folders already exist, then make sure they are completely empty.
Updated CSV Compatibility Patches for Tamriel Rebuilt
Expand
Notice: You must download the new EDIDlist CSV files under the Miscellaneous Tab on the Dagger Galore nexus page. They're updated specifically for the newer TR versions.
1. Download and Extract "EDIDlist for ModExporter 9-SEPT-2022"
2. Drag these files into OpenMW 0.45 directory and overwrite if prompted.

ModExporter Conversion Options
Expand
Notice: You can change conversion options for plugins in ESMMastersMap.csv under the section Conversion Options (#), below is a explanation of each available option.
- pluginless export - this is the first record of the ESMMasters.CSV and allows you to convert "pluginless replacer" mods. It does not work for race/head replacers. Just install your mod as usual into Morrowind/OpenMW and choose "Morrowind.esm" or Tribunal/Bloodmoon for the ESP. ModExporter will try to detect and convert all the textures and models that are not from the Vanilla game. Do not use the generated ESP, just install the converted Meshes and Textures.
- #blender - use new Blender/GIMP/Python conversion method
- #clothing - convert clothing.
- #vwd - generate VWD with default size thresholds (large buildings, tall trees or larger).
- #vwdfast - generate VWD for older computers (vivec city cantons, sections of ghostfence, some huge trees).
- #vwdhd - generate VWD for a very fast computer (most trees and buildings).
- #vwdultra - generates VWD for almost anything larger than a humanoid. I don't know what specs are needed to get good performance with this setting.
- #vwdonly - don't generate regular objects, just make VWD.
- #enableregions - modify region records. This requires merging of old and new region data to work (merged regions from Tamriel Rebuilt included with TR_Fixes).
- #compile - will enable the built-in byte-compiler to build any scripts in the mod. This option is only needed for full script records. Script fragments that are associated with Dialog records are always automatically byte-compiled. The byte-compiler is still incomplete, but should support about 70% of basic scripts as well as a small number of OBSE extensions which are used to interact with the Morrowind Compatibility Layer.
- #armor - will disable the built-in algorithm which substitutes armor and clothing models from Morrowind with a compatible Oblivion asset. This allows any converted Morrowind armors/clothing to be loaded from disk and used in-game. If #armor is not used, then Morrowind armor/clothing will not appear in Morroblivion, even if you run the batch file to convert and then install the armor/clothing NIF files. Oblivion asset substitution is used by default because the NIF conversion process for armor and clothing is still very buggy.
Exporting Plugin Files
Notice: Make sure all other programs such as games, web-browsers, etc. are all closed. ModExporter requires ALOT of resources and will use all available CPU cores.

1. Run the "start modexporter.bat" file. It will display the folder paths to wherever you configured the settings.bat file in the step above. Now press any key and it will start the ModExporter executable to generate the Morroblivion-compatible ESP files.
2. When the OpenMW-CS window appears, select "Edit A Content File". Then select Morrowind.esm from the drop down menu, put a checkmark next to TR_Mainland.esm select open. Then wait for the "TR_Mainland.omwaddon" window to load.
Notice: Do NOT close the console window, or you will abort the entire ModExporter process. When "TR_Mainland.omwaddon" window appears, select "File->Export ESM" from the menu bar. Navigate to "C:\Oblivion.output\Data" and select Save, wait for the export process to complete. You should see the message "[TR_Mainland] EXPORT COMPLETED!". Do not close any windows!!
4. Select File->Open from the menu bar. Select "Morrowind.esm" from the drop-down and put a checkmark next to "TR_Preview.esp". Wait for the "TR_Preview.omwaddon" window to load.
TIP: Close the "TR_Mainland.omwaddon" window while your waiting. When the "TR_Preview.omwaddon" window appears, select "Export-ESM" from the menu bar. Navigate to "C:\Oblivion.output\Data" and click Save, wait for the message "[TR_Preview] EXPORT COMPLETED!". Then close the "TR_Preview.omwaddon" window.
