Skywind Project Release [Updated 4 November 2013]

Submitted by Shadow on

Skywind v0.9 Released!

Skywind is a remake of Morrowind in the Skyrim game. It is a large mod that really plays like an entirely new game. As such it is a very large download at about 3.5GB. It has several plugins (a master file and patch) and all the graphics and sounds to make up the world of Morrowind. Skywind is in an Alpha state, meaning you can move around the world, interact with a few things, but the full content of questing, gameplay and many other various elements are not part of the game yet. These Alpha releases are more for getting people interested, inspired and up-to-date with development so they can help with the project. This is truly one of the most open public forums for developing an Elder Scrolls mod and we rely on the the continuous addition of contributors for the success of a playable game. When you can finish the main quest line with much of the game elements in use, we will update the status of Skywind to Beta. Please consider how you can contribute in any small way when you see the potential of one of the best games being developed for 2013/2014.

Because we are introducing expanding content and code, bugs will occur between releases. You are as much our testers as anyone, so please report anything but be specific, otherwise your posts will be ignored.

We are also going to reduce the number of public releases we do. If you are interested in joining our development team, we have development releases to make sure that everybody has the latest version. These releases are regular.

If you are interested in helping with the project please read this thread.

Important Notes

  • REQUIRED: Skyrim and Morrowind Game of the Year (GOTY), or Morrowind plus the Tribunal and Bloodmoon expansions. These can be installed in any location of your choice, but they must be installed on your computer.

  • Originally, Morrowind had almost no voice acting, however if you wish to experience Skywind with voices, head on over to the Voice Acting Thread where you can download (or help create) some quality voices!

  • The changelog for all versions can be found on the Skywind Project History Thread.

Installation Steps

1: Download the latest Skywind Installer and run the contained SkywindInstaller.exe, then follow the onscreen instructions.

You may have to run the program as an administrator. This copies the required plugins to your Skyrim folder that you want to install Skywind to. They are separate from the Complete Skywind Installation Pack, because you are required to have Morrowind already installed on your PC.

The current file is dated 4 November 2013. (Fixed Windows 8 bug in installer)

1a: Download the Skywind Installer ( 0.9.0.1 )

1b: Download the Skywind Assets Pack ( 0.9.0.1 )

Extract the content ("textures", "meshes" etc...) of the both the complete installation and any update packs directly to your Skyrim/data folder.  All files should be placed in the same directory structure as the downloaded file, so look for the "Data" folder in the download and copy/merge to your Skyrim Data subfolders.

If you have "free-falling" issues its because you have not put the files in the correct place. You must have "...\data\meshes\morrowind\..." and "...\data\textures\morrowind\..." in your Skyrim folder.

Upgrading: The complete installation is now at v0.9.0.1. If you have previously installed an earlier complete install, please download the latest version and just let it overwrite your current install.

2: Enable Skywind.esm and Skywind - Patch.esp in your launcher or mod manager, and please make sure the Skywind - Patch.esp is at the bottom of your load order.

You can either start a new game where you will be given the option of beginning in Skyrim or Morrowind, or you can Download This Mod, which will place a Dragonborn style mapmarkers to allow you to travel back and forth between Morrowind and Skyrim.

And last but not least, check out the Official Skywind mods list

Notes on Future Updates

As updates happen over the course of the project we will have patches that you can download and install in sequence as they become available. Our complete package will be updated to include these updates, but for most users because it is such a large download, the patches will be more desirable. These patches will be based lined from Skywind 0.8.0 onwards. They will include the change log of what has been added or changed.

Keep in mind that this is an extreme alpha, and many things do not work at all. Right now what we can do is limited, so if you are good with anything in the CK, please let us know, and start working on something.  And once again, if you have a bug and wish to report it, please be as specific as possible, or your posts will be ignored.

That’s it!  Have fun.

Working with Skywind in Creation Kit

Due to a large size of Skywind.esm, the Creation Kit can't load all of its records together with Skyrim.esm. This leads to "out of array handle" errors and random objects being removed from cells.

You need to download a stripped down version of Skyrim.esm which was originally from SureAI.de Resources.  It is from the authors of Nehrim conversion for Oblivion, and they most likely have the same problems with CK and large mods.

Before running CK replace skyrim.esm with this version, when starting the game restore the original back. If you are trying to load a saved game but it drops to desktop, you most likely forgot to restore the original master.

Also, here is small program to do the master switching automatically. It is basic, but it gets the job done: Download Skywind Exchanger.

Click here for a full tutorial on getting set up to work with Skywind in the Creation Kit.

Empty GRUP records are treated as ITM when cleaning, however technically they are not. The decision to count them as ITM was made by original author of xEdit, and I'm not changing it because it will invalidate BOSS databases without any real benefit.

Could you please put the rar into a torrent file so that people don't have to rely on direct download? And before someone jumps in and says "Oh, torrents are illegal!" -- they aren't.

That being said, I've been watching the rar file say "Opening in 13 hours..." for two hours now and it's still at 0.0%, I've also waited two days before the thing even said I was allowed to download it. It kept telling me too many people had viewed the page or downloaded the file. So, yeah. And I don't have issues downloading rar files from the nexus, from anywhere really, but this thing just won't download.

Edit: And it's not my internet. I just downloaded five full games off of steam in just under an hour. Torrents, in my opinion, are just faster, easier and quite convenient for everyone involved. There are no "view limits" or download limits. You just seed it for some time, let people download it, then they seed and voila, everyone can have it in no time!

That's funny... because when I downloaded it, it was going at 1,200kb/s.

What browser are you using?

Yeah no problems for me; I get 2,500 - 3,000 KB/s using the google drive link.

I'm using the latest version of Google Chrome. ;o

Edit: I'm currently using the BayFiles link, which is currently 0.3/3.2GB -- 11 hour estimate.

Google Drive link says --> Sorry, you can't view or download this file at this time.

Too many users have viewed or downloaded this file recently. Please try accessing the file again later. If the file you are trying to access is particularly large or is shared with many people, it may take up to 24 hours to be able to view or download the file. If you still can't access a file after 24 hours, contact your domain administrator.

All I know is some people have had problems with certain browsers, I haven't had any problems worth Firefox maybe try that or another browser?

guys, the link has expired, have to put up a new

What, the Google Drive link only lasts a full 30 days before you have to put up a new one?

no, it has expired because of massive traffic, the amount of downloads has been overwhelming

Oh. So that's what that message was. I thought it was just me trying to download at extremely unlucky times.

Aaannndd eloth with the blatantly obvious win lol
Karma: 0 (0 votes)

Oh well, just update the link with the new public release, no point in even fixing the old link, lols.

Yeah that is why I usually had two different google drive mirrors of the 2.5GB morroblivion download.  It didn't happen often, but sometimes it would get a ton of hits.  Next release, I can upload the big file to both of those google accounts so we have more mirrors.

Edit: also, the google link in the first post works fine for me right now, 2,200 KB/s down.

I see that my "Mirror1" link has now been changed,it was using google.

I will re-open it as "Mirror2" as it has been accessed a lot of times and needs re-uploading to my google drive anyway.

Or have they been switched,is the First link now my old original mirror1 link.?

I'm having a what I assume is a problem with Skywind. I understand NPCs don't have vocal dialog, but I am also not seeing any text dialog. This makes the game nearly impossible to enjoy for me. Is there a file i need to download? I could have installed it all wrong, but I am fairly certain i did it correctly. Would appreciate some help... especially if I'm just being an idiot.

You should really try to turn on the subtitles in your in-game settings.

Also fus-roh-do helps (find it on nexus).

I don't know if I'd say Skywind is at the "enjoyable for the general public" stage yet, though. It's more at the "come see what we're working on/come help us" stage.

clearly, this is like a making off experience. Only here, you can be part of it !

Hello everyone!

I recentely was thinking about Morrowind and the few visual enhancement mods just weren't cutting it for me so I remembered you guys and this project Skywind, got to say guys that it's looking fantastic.

Having next to no experience in Coding or art, is there any way I can assist? :-)

Sure there is a few easy to learn tasks like navmeshing, or even making quests there is a new tutorial on that, just Cuz you have no experience doesn't mean you can't learn just watch some tutorials and play around a bit see if it's up your alley

Roll out the red carpet, first there was the birth of His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge, but that pales in comparison to the birth of Skywind 0.8.0!! Download now party people!

Skywind Installer don't have Skywind.esm...

The patch fix is mainly fixes for bugged meshes, meshes that cause ctds, or falling through objects. So if anyone has any of those issues, please report them, and tell us where you were, and where you were looking.

We never said that after 0.9 it would 1.0, it could be something else... Oh the suspense !

Straight to 5.0!

Thanks! to whoever put up those mirrors, the second mirror [google] downloaded for me in 3 minutes, the update took 5 seconds and the installer about 15 seconds.

:)

Okay, props to the person redoing the Ascadian Isle areas. This is like playing a whole new game. Now if only the caves would stop crashing...

Now if only the caves would stop crashing...

You could always post which caves are crashing(I stated that above) and I can find out what is causing ctds in caves.

Last night I saw Skywind had been updated. I haven't downloaded any Skywind files yet and so decided to give it a try. (I check the new posts on this site about every other day, and love looking at progress pictures, but don't play Skyrim much anymore, so it wasn't worth downloading).
I tried mirror 1, and got half way through. before I went to bed I tried again with mirror 2. I got up this morning and mirror 2 had also failed, so I tried mirror 3. That one worked! (I believe this was due to my slow internet, not the mirrors).
Anyhow, I unpacked the .bsa and merged all of the folders and repacked into a new bsa and it's 3.9 gigs. Man, you guys have been really busy!
Anyway, I'm excited to try out some of the new regions I've been looking at pictures of, as well as just see for myself the beggings of Vvardenfell viewed through Skyrim eyes. :D
Thank you once again guys, you guys rock!

Ice
Ps. Just out of curiosity, why does the download contain both bsa files and loose files?

I packed facegen and lod files into BSA since they are not supposed to be updated any time soon (until we finish with landscaping and need a new lod or someone decides to change faces of already done npcs). Single file and less size is more convenient than thousands of small files.

Zilav, actually facegen are updated from time to time to fix dark forehead bugs mostly but it's no big deal we can have the new version loose and repackage sometime later.

I just want to say how awesome your work is with skywind. I have been look at this mod for about a year now and after I got my new pc i finally installed it and it is just great. It is already playable, i think the only things that are missing, is the clothes of the NPCs and problems like invisble hands when i put on gloves. All in all, keep it up and i will share your work with anyone I can!

nice mod but the npc dont have clothes except imperial guards

edit i saw a couple posts back whats happening. but great mod anyways

I had tried the mod once before but couldn't get it working, but I tried it again tonight and got it up and running with ease. I just wanna say thanks for all the work on this, it was an amazing feeling when it loaded up and I was standing there on the boat, all in current ultra detail settings. I wish I was useful for something so I could contribute, although I may get in on the voice acting. In the meantime I'll be following this project closely. Thanks again

I just tried out the new version and I've got to say, it's impressive. You guys are doing such a great job, we all appreciate the hard work and effort. Morrowind is my favorite game in the series, it's breathtaking to see it being reborn again. Gazing up at Red Mountain in the distance from Balmora gave me goosebumps.

I did notice that some of the landscape feels a little barren- at least, more barren than I remember Morrowind looking, anyway. I assumed that this was because not all of the trees and rocks and so forth are in place yet, but I wasn't sure. Don't read this as a complaint- I was just wondering if that is indeed the kind of thing that's yet to be converted or added, I'm no modder so I don't know the process.

Anyway the pack is already spectacular and the land looks great. The crashing tide and extra clutter built into the landscape of Seyda Neen (fishing poles, clothes on a clothesline, etc.) ARE a little odd to me, but I guess that's just personal preference.

Hi everyone im new to all of this so pls dont be harsh on me.

I was just wondering would it be possible to improve some meshes (because i have seen a lot of mesh improvement mods for skyrim) or for instance "skyrimaze" the dwemmer cities (make them look and function like in  skyrim ,add stone and copper i dont know what metal was used),maby use some parts from morrowind overhul.

I am sorry if i have failed at somethinge or if i posted on the wrong page.

Yeah it is possible, that could be your job since you brought it up!

Its an odd thing, the Skywind world as it was 6 months ago is exactly how it was in Morrowind, rock for rock, tree for tree. Its basically an optical illusion, you are seeing it through the lens of a different engine, so it looks more barren. There are twice as many tilted textures in a given cell, and this makes repeating patterns more noticeable which didn't/doesn't help. Mountains in Morrowind were served by the heightmap textured with rock textures, and this just does not translate well for the same effect. We are used to complex rock shapes to form mountains and hills. Anyway as you can clearly see we are landscaping everything out as best as we can, so that the game truly looks like a new release.

I am sorry to inform but i have tons of ideas but apsolute 0 experience in mod making...

Don't be an idea guy.

Put them all in the same post so that they don't get thrown around everywhere. And then edit that post if you think of something new instead of posting it else where.

Well i would be happy even more if i knew how to get started and actually do something it would be a dream come true if i could realize my ideas because they just keep poping up all day long...

Hi, Im new to this and im sorry if this issue has been resolved, but is there supposed to be audio from the NPC's who had speaking roles from the original game? Such as right when you spawn on the boat and when you select your character type?

No audio yet. Look at the forum threads here about voice acting. We need people to help.

You have to have the tenacity to learn something to make an idea into reality or bring an idea to the point where other people understand it. If your looking to learn something so you can contribute then learn some blender modeling stuff, or maybe get a mic and do some voice acting.

You sound allot like me before I learned how to model with blender and drawing. then one day I said screw it I'm going to learn how to model, and I did to a point where I can do some pretty awesome stuff. I guess I have always had an artistic side to me though. When I was 7 I learned to play the violin and have since learned to play piano and guitar. So I guess it's diffrent for everyone.

So what i'm trying to say is if you have the tenacity with a brewt force will then learn how to do programming or one of the many other things that you can learn to help us with and come and help us out. But please do be like the other newbie people and suggest things every day of the week.

Hello, I use Skywind from the early days, I have putted the last version and for the first time there is a mega bug. Outside no more constructions are visible and Inside my lad fall in an empty space "empty of walls and floors but some stuff and NPC still there"; I have first DL the whole big package which I have putted in my Skyrim data folder, then have done the same with the update, then DL the new Installer and updated Skywind with it. I have enabled Skywind.esm and patch and assets. Am I the only one with that big bug ?
