Morroblivion Installation Instructions

A video installation guide for Morroblivion version 68 and newer is available here.

Welcome to the Morroblivion installation section. The written instructions below are primarily for setting up Morroblivion version 67 and older. For Morroblivion version 68 and newer, use the current Morroblivion Project Release page and the video guide linked above.

If you are experienced with TES modding, much of this will be familiar. If you are new to Oblivion modding, read the instructions carefully before installing.

Requirements

Notice: These requirements are also listed on the Morroblivion Project Release page.

Expand

What do I need to own?

You must own legitimate installations of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind Game of the Year Edition, including the Tribunal and Bloodmoon expansions, and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion version 1.2.0416 with the Shivering Isles expansion. CD/DVD, Steam, and GOG versions are supported.

Important: These instructions are for the original The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, not Oblivion Remastered.

xOBSE and Plugins
Install xOBSE separately. Installation instructions for xOBSE and most OBSE / xOBSE plugins are included in their archive folders or readme files. Follow those instructions carefully.

Recommended Tools

  • Wrye Bash - Recommended for installing legacy resource archives, managing installers, and creating a Bashed Patch when needed.
  • Wrye Bash Releases - Current release downloads.
  • LOOT - Recommended for automated load-order sorting and load-order warnings.

Installing Morroblivion Version 68 and Newer

Expand

Notice: Version 68 and newer use the current Morroblivion installer workflow. The legacy screenshot-based instructions below are useful for context, but they are outdated for v68 and newer.

  1. Download the current Morroblivion installer from the Morroblivion Project Release page.
  2. Extract the installer archive, then run the installer.
  3. The installer will detect your legal Morrowind and Oblivion installations before deployment.
  4. When prompted, select your Morrowind and Oblivion installation directories. Select the main game folders, not the Data folders.
  5. When prompted for the Morroblivion installation directory, select your Oblivion directory for a direct install, unless you are using a managed mod setup that requires a different staging directory.
  6. Install xOBSE separately, then install any OBSE / xOBSE plugins required by the Morroblivion options or add-ons you enable.
  7. Use Wrye Bash, LOOT, or another Oblivion-aware mod manager to review your plugin list and load order.
  8. Launch Oblivion through xOBSE after installation.

Patch Notice: Morroblivion version 68 currently does not use separate patch files. The associated v67 patches 1-3 are for version 67 only and are already included in v68.

Installing the Morroblivion Master - Version 67 and Older

Notice: This section is for Morroblivion version 67 and older. The installer text may differ slightly from the screenshots because the images are legacy examples.

Expand
  1. Download the master file installer for the version you are installing from the Project Release thread or its archive section. Extract the executable, launch it, and follow the on-screen prompts.

  2. Select your Morrowind and Oblivion directories. Use Browse if needed. Select the main game folders, not the Data folders.

    Example: Select C:\Oblivion, not C:\Oblivion\Data.

Once the installer detects both games, select Next.

  3. [insert success image]

When the installer reports Success, Morroblivion has been installed to your Oblivion Data folder. Verify that Morrowind_ob.esm is present in:

    Oblivion\Data\Morrowind_ob.esm

Installing Resources with Wrye Bash - Version 67 and Older

Expand

Download the resource archive for the version you are installing from the Project Release thread or its archive section.

  1. Download and install Wrye Bash. Wrye Bash is a mod-management tool used to manage Oblivion installers, plugins, and load-order workflows.

  2. Launch Wrye Bash and open the Installers tab to initialize Bash Installers for the first time.

  3. Wrye Bash usually creates an Oblivion Mods folder at the same directory level as your Oblivion folder.

Example: If Oblivion is installed at C:\Oblivion, Wrye Bash may create:

    C:\Oblivion Mods\Bash Installers

Place the Morroblivion resource archive into the Bash Installers folder. Do not manually unpack it first unless your setup specifically requires that.

  4. Return to the Installers tab in Wrye Bash. If the archive was placed correctly, it should appear in the package list on the left.

Select the Morroblivion archive. The sub-packages will appear in the center pane. Always install 00 Core. Optional packages are prefixed with 01.

Detailed descriptions of optional packages are available in the Project Release thread.

Right-click the Morroblivion archive and select Install.

Troubleshooting: Missing textures, yellow placeholder objects, or falling through the starting ship usually means the 00 Core resources were not installed correctly or were not installed into the correct Oblivion Data path.

Installing Resources Manually - Version 67 and Older

Expand

Download the resource archive for the version you are installing from the Project Release thread or its archive section.

  1. Open or extract the Morroblivion resource archive. For legacy versions, you should see folders similar to the following:

    • 00 Core
    • 01 Chargen and Transport
    • 01 Morrowind Music
    • 01 Oblivion Trees - Morroblivion Tree Replacer
    • 01 Poster Map - Morroblivion Better Map
    • 01 Voiced Conversations
  2. Open the 00 Core folder and copy all of its contents into your Oblivion Data directory:

    Oblivion\Data

Copy the contents of the folder, not the folder itself.

  3. Repeat the same process for any optional 01 folders you want to install. These folders are optional and should only be installed if you want the feature they provide.

Updating Morroblivion and Other Patches

Notice: This section applies to version 67 and older. For version 68 and newer, do not install v67 patch files over v68 unless a current release note specifically instructs you to do so.

Expand

Version 68 and Newer

Morroblivion version 68 currently does not have separate patch files. The v67 patches 1-3 are for version 67 only and are included in v68.

Version 67 and Older

  1. For Morroblivion v67, use the current patch guidance from the Project Release thread and the Dagger Galore a Patch for Morroblivion Nexus page.

  2. Dagger Galore is the accumulated Morroblivion patch package for v67. It includes worldspace improvements, quest fixes, object placement fixes, landscape fixes, and other corrections.

  3. Install the main file according to the Nexus page instructions. Only install optional files if the Nexus page indicates they are still required for your setup.

  4. Open or extract the archive into your Oblivion Data directory, or install it through Wrye Bash. This process follows the same general workflow described in the Installing Resources Manually and Installing Resources with Wrye Bash sections above.

Lighting Note: Dagger Galore v67 lists Morrowind Lighting Overhaul-related changes as merged. Check the Nexus Files tab for the latest main and optional file layout before installing additional lighting files.

Setting Up Load Order

Expand

Tip: Use Wrye Bash, LOOT, or another Oblivion-aware mod manager to manage your load order. The default Oblivion Launcher can enable plugins, but it should not be used as your primary load-order management tool.

Recommended: Use LOOT for automated sorting, then review Morroblivion-specific placement notes manually.

Important: If you are not using EngineBugFixes, Morrowind_ob.esm must load directly after Oblivion.esm. EngineBugFixes removes the strict technical requirement, but keeping Morrowind_ob.esm directly after Oblivion.esm remains a safe baseline.

If you are not using EngineBugFixes, your load order should begin like this:

  • Oblivion.esm
  • Morrowind_ob.esm
  • ... any other ESM or ESP files

General Morroblivion plugin order:

  • Oblivion.esm
  • Morrowind_ob.esm
  • Other ESM files
  • Other gameplay, worldspace, and compatibility plugins
  • Morrowind_ob.esp
  • Morrowind_ob - UCWUS.esp if installed
  • Morrowind_ob - Conversation.esp if installed
  • Morrowind_ob - MorroblivionTreeReplacer.esp if installed
  • Any Morroblivion map replacers

The Project Release thread contains additional guidelines and explanations for all included files under Load Order and File Details.

I have a clean install of the Retail Discs of both Morrowind and Oblivion, both are GOTYE. I have followed these instructions on Post #1 to the T and when I launch Oblivion it still just plays Oblivion. Any help is greatly appreciated.

After Part IIIa, Step 1, it would be helpful to mention that before installing Wyre Bash, you need to start the Oblivion Launcher from Steam at least once to initialize the registry entries before Wyre Bash will be able to find the game. I could not find this documented anywhere.

"4) You'll see 'Success' message and there now should be Morrowind_ob.esm file in your 'Oblivion/Data' folder.

I see "sucess" and then I get an error message that the program may not have installed correctly.

The second time I installed it I went ahead reinstalled with the recomended settings and did not get the error.  Though either time I installed it did not create any kind of Morrowind_ob.esp file in my Oblivion folder or from the search that I did anywhere on my computer at all.  So when I start into the Oblivion game in the Dungeon (odd as I was expecting to start on the boat in Morrowind) I get a message that I am missing Morrowind_ob.esp

I do happen to have a Morrowind_ob.esm file in my Oblivion folder but my game is not looking for that file apparently.

I am assuming that something has changed and that the above directions are no longer quite accurate with some changes being made or maybe the list of files to download are not accurate anymore not sure.

Any "new" instructions or help understanding why the above ones are not working in my particular situation?

Download the resources from Project Release thread. From here there are 2 ways: using Wrye Bash and manually.

I think I understand what I am having issues with now.  I think I am missing this "resources" file download...  The only thing that I found following that link was this "Morroblivion v064 installer.7z"  Where does one find these "resources" files?  I only see the one file download on that page....

I now have the wrybash thing, but I can't imagine it will do me any good if don't have the "resource" files to install with it?

This is crazy confusing running all over the place downloading a file from here and another from there and there and there etc...  Especially when no one gives the exact name of each file needing to be downloaded in the sets of directions..  This "resources" should instead be the entire list of files including versions etc.

So in trying to install this wry thing it is giving me a red warning not install in program files, how do I install it somewhere else?  If I install it somewhere else "where" exactly do I install it?  Or do I just ignore the warning against installing it in "program file x86" though it says that will commonly cause problems and errors.

It might be handy to include these things in your instructions...

The wry installation must not have worked... It opened in the Mods tab  with...

[/] Oblivion.esm [Sl]

[/]Morrowind-ob.esm

[/]Knights.esp

[/]DLCBattlehouseCastle.esp

[/]DLCMehrhrunesRazor.esp

[/]DLCSpellTomes.esp

[/]DLCShiveringIsles.esp

[/]DLCFrostcrag.esp

[/]DLCVileLair.esp

[/]HorseArmor.esp

[/]DLCThievesDen.esp

[/]Bashed Patch,0.esp

----------------------------------

Then when I open the "Installation" tab I have

[ ]==Last==

------------------------------------------------------------------

I could just do the manual installation but where does one find this... Morroblivion resource archive?  Is this something I can download or does it exist somewhere in what was installed by the Morroblivion v064 installer?  Where does one go looking for these resources?

Well I cannot open the V064 .7z file to find any resources in it and I am unable to find any morroblivion resources on my hard drive.  I am concluding that I am must be missing this download but I cannot find any place to download this archive from.  What is the actual "name" of this file archive?

This appears to be the end of the journey, without the ability to find this "morroblivion resource archive" to download it appears I have no wat to get Morroblivion to run.

Why isn't this resource archive a part of the V064 installation if it is that important?  I will do some searches on this again from time to time, but for the moment I admit defeat...  Aggravating as I have been waiting for half a decade for this to become available to try it out...  But alas no one else seems to be interested anymore and it seems to be a relatively dead topic now...

I'm sorry that you are getting so frustrated with the installation process.  Oblivion is notorious for being one of the most difficult games to mod and Morroblivion is one of the hardest Oblivion mod to install even for an experienced Oblivion modder.

[External image]

Please refer to the screenshot above.  Under the section  labeled "II. Resources (2.3 Gb)", I have placed a red box to identify the links to download the "morroblivion resource archive".  This file will be named "Morroblivion_v064_Complete.7z".  There are four links, but you only need to use one.  If one does not work for you, then try the next.  Use this link to get to the correct download page: https://morroblivion.com/forums/morroblivion/mods/753

If you need step by step directions to install Morroblivion, then I encourage you to log into the Morroblivion-Community-HelpDesk Discord server and read through the channel named "#step-by-step-directions".  Good luck.

HELP! I konow it's 2020, but I'm having some difficults with Morroblivion...
I've just tried to start Morrowind questline with my level 25 character from Oblivion, but every time I have to speak with someone important from the beginning (that Imperial Guard right after we get off the boat, for example), my character gets stuck!
I read and re-read all the instalation process... I even thought that if I changed my level to level 4 I would be able to play it normally, but it didn't work...
I'm very excited to play this Mod, but I don't know how to do it... PLEASE, SOMEONE HELP ME! I'M DESPERATE!

Double check your load order.

It tells me that Morrowind_ob.esp is not installed. What did I do wrong?

Does Morrowind_ob.esp exist in Oblivion\Data

Does Morrowind_ob.esp exist in Oblivion\Data

Yes I can see it in the folder. Still doesn't work. Did I miss something?

Are you perhaps missing Morrowind_ob.esm?

It shows both of them in my oblivion/data folder

It also shows your OBSE plugins directly in your data folder instead of in your data\OBSE\Plugins folder, which would account for your inability to run Morroblivion.

I got it to work! Apparently Oblivion wasn't registering one of the data files. Once I made sure it accepted them both, it works great! Thank you

I updated the first post, completely revamped for v66+

I link here the patch file from the 68 bugfixes thread: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1XOPV5eUH9ixmOfTsLyzXp5AXNLV7LJ08/view?usp=sharing (it's the same file, even when it's updated, the link stays the same). Install as any mod, and activate the esp files.

I think it's advisable to also put a link to it in the first post, as long as 68 is current. It would solve a lot of problems for people installing.
