stijmunkeyI've said it before and ill say it again I'm all for variety and having different voice actors will do that for us we have only 3 people who can do the Dunmer voice now and that is a majority of the lines, high possibly even double digit thousands, but we've had this discussion before and it was agreed to go with the original raspy sound for all the male dunmer if possible, we are also fairly limited as in we don't have much of a choice there is a lot of shared lines so we need all of our dunmer to sound similar so those lines don't sound out of place, and unfortunately the amazing actor posted above is too far off and it would sound like one character having two drastically different voices at the same time absolutely killing immersion, which a lot of people are very particular about. I am still going to try and contact him maybe he can get the original sound or do another race maybe orcs or something and this is all if he is even available interesting npcs is a wip he could be busy with that

I agree, his acting itself is great. But I would like to atleast see if he can make his voice sound more like the rest of the Dunmer that we have.

Haha, really seem to have kicked off some discussion with a link to that guy playing Drelas, huh? :D

I don't think anyone should be ofended here, especially anyone whose devoted free time to lending voices already - we're all grateful for that. But I think, realistically, there are a TON of dunmer to voice, and there's going to be some variation there where voice artists come and go over time.

May as well play into that as a strength. Especially if the person can act with decent quality. (As an aside I also think this guy playing Drelas has a far raspier voice than we see in Skyrim/Oblivion.)

Is it possible to disable the combat/misc voices on specific NPCs? That might be a simple solution for those few who have particularly deviant voices.

It might be but it would be a lot of extra work in any case ill try and contact him, on a lighter note your voice will be in my new video uploading now!

No way! I was about to go to bed but I'll wait up for that :D. Kinda nervous actually. Does it fit well? :/

I'd still like to do the shared lines for you but It's quite demotivating seeing 8 different versions of the same answer to a single 'latest rumour' and having no idea if I'm voicing the correct one...

ya sorry about that i dont think there is much i can do however at least not yet, ummm it could be a while before you see the video its 26 minutes long its been uploading for an hour, its at like 9%

Edit: I take that back just voice the one you think fits best and i should be able to just use that one

Kk fair enough gonna go to bed then.

Another way we could do the shared lines is someone could play though the game and, when meeting male altmer, just jot down whatever you see that hasn't been voiced. I.e, Ask the seyda need shop keep latest rumours, then relay that info to me. Then I can match it in the spreadsheet, find it, and record/save the correct line with the right filename.

Could work, just requires that someone tells me what they find as they play. Since so little of the game is actually released atm could keep on top of it as updates go live.

Edit:

Just saw your edit. Will consider it!

lol nice arnold voice, keep the tone and lose the arnold and we could probably use it

bahahahha that louis is genius! umm hes already done but the person who did him hasnt posted in a while and i just gave his stuff a listen and it sounds like it will have to be redone for quality i can hear too much background noise even heard a chair move once lol, so what im saying you can do all of louis's lines if you would like

but one person doing the thousands of dialogue, and you were talking about variety and then you talk about having none?

My point being that trying to add as much rasp as possible means that the voices sound the same. I can't tell the difference between them and so it just becomes a matter of sound levels and quality. But I guess you will lose your voice pretty quickly if you try putting it on for too many lines of dialog.

unfortunately the amazing actor posted above is too far off and it would sound like one character having two drastically different voices at the same time absolutely killing immersion

This is where I disagree, killing immersion is having all the Dunmer sound all the same. So for the very people who have been doing the acting for this race to come out and say, "no we don't want this person because it doesn't sound like the way we are doing it" - is not right. His voice has a rasp to it, it just so happens that its not being overdone, that is my point.

Ah that would be great! I really like the old bugger's lines hehe

Just out of curiosity: what are you doing to this accent of the dunmer like it's used in skyrim? because that is not raspy at all. more like Cockney

I understand and on most points even agree thats why im going to contact him anyway and i heard the rasp, we dont need them to all sound exactly the same but they need to at least be similar, one voice for an entire race is how bethesda set it up so for the sake of continuity and not having one character talking in 2 drastically different voices we have to have them similar, we dont seem to have a choice or again one character will have 2 completely different voices at the same time, all im saying is we need him to overdue the rasp a bit and get it a little closer or we will have a lot of unhappy people on our hands, not just voice actors, im not a VA and this is coming from me

Might not have to do a re-record just yet - if the guy can run a simple sound removal on that clip in audacity it might come out okay!

Hey, I'm up now. How's that upload coming? :P

Jeeez, how big is the file? Is it just raw fraps or something? Because you can render that down to something much smaller with no quality loss. I have a lot of experience uploading large videos to youtube (2h+ in length) and often with lengths like that the upload will fail and crash. :/

You can use that handbrake tool on any video file btw, even if it has already been rendered before. It takes gigs down to like 30mbs. Very handy.

No it's not raw fraps but pretty much lol thanks for the tip though I'll grab that for next time :) I'm still a youtube noob
Karma: 0 (0 votes)

Haha no problem. Handbrake might look complicated but just don't worry about any of the settings if you don't want to. Just open it, import the file by clicking the big green plus, and then handbrake it. The defaults are good enough.

Hey! Just noticed the video went up.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXHawhs8sOA

A fun watch for sure. Is it just me, or are the voices really quiet? Is that because you had them set low in your options, or something with the way they're being formatted?

But thanks a whole bunch! I /might/ be able to get you an elderly female altmer voice soon. Stay tuned.

Edit:

Also, where might I find that unvoiced opening line in the spreadsheet? Where Arille says he's a publican? It certainly doesn't appear under his specific lines, and It doesn't seem to exist in the shared lines either. Perhaps I havent used the spreadsheet correctly, and perhaps theres a lot more like that I've missed?

Any elaboration on that would be appreciated, I want to fix it.

Like I said I haven't heard from him in a while, also cleaning up his audio might work if you can get the chair moving sound out lol, but the actor also sounds quite a bit young for the character and I'm sure he wouldn't mind that you steal this one for quality purposes

Okay guys I sat down for a few hours today and took a decent look at the shared lines. This is what I've come up with:

http://www.mediafire.com/?1khb85ud3hpb90o

That is every instance of a 'high elf' for about the first 1,200 lines of dialogue on the page. It's about 35 quests worth of dialogue, and I've seperated all the files into a folder named for the quest they belong to. (So its 35 folders).

I'm 99% sure that despite being marked as ''High elf'' lines, I was voicing dumner there though. I got tipped off about halfway through when I realised a bunch of main quest stuff came up, and there was a 'high elf' character talking about how decadent and snobbish the altmer are!

Regardless, I voiced it anyway, just to feel complete. Feel free to bin whatever lines aren't needed - or you can use them as placeholders untill someone gives them a proper dumner voice.

Now the next chunk of lines on the shared dialogue tab is where things get complicated. There are no filepaths or anything, just a load of possible topics a player could ask with a different answer for every possible race in the game. I'm wondering if there is some rhyme to the reason - like maybe, every sixth response listed is always Argonian, say, and then I can use that to make sure i'm picking the right one. If that doesn't work out, I'll just do what stij has always been advising and pick whichever one sounds best.

There are no filenames for me to save to, so I'm going to be saving the next lines as the name of the Topic the player questioned the character on. If you would rather something else, like the TopicID or TopicDalt - let me know now before I get started!

Anyways. Thats the first 1,000 done out of 8,000. If I can find the time to do 1,000 a day should be finished in a weeks time.

Yikes that's a lot your doing great, ya that naming should work fine also it might be organized in such a way that say every 1st line is altmer but I'm not sure, if you find a line that is no doubt altmer just remember which place it was in and go by your theory see if it works, that would be cool, and finally I'm not sure why the voices are quiet I haven't watched the video yet they seemed ok while I was playing ill have to get back to you on that one also as for the missing lines thing we had this problem with caius aswell, digital mentioned the spreadsheet may be missing a few lines I guess this is one of them, cinjaxon just paused the video and read and recorded the line for me I guess you could just do the same
Karma: 0 (0 votes)

''We Altmer are proud, wise, and beautiful. The Empire is built on the arts, crafts, and sciences of the High Elves.''

That one appears as the second of three possible answers to the topic ''Altmer''. I guess it's a start!

I can pause the video, no problem. I noticed there are a lot of topics there in that list - and obviously you only clicked a couple on screen. Are they all properly voiced? If not, any chance you could show me which ones are missing.

Right now I just want Arrille feeling perfect because he's at the start and getting Sedya Neen all mindblowing and 100% will do a lot for peoples excitement and acitivty on the mod, I think.

Then maybe we can pick another Altmer, say one in Balmora, or near the start of the game. (Are there any more in Sedya neen?) And get all their dialogue all smooth. IDK.

It's not that they aren't voiced properly it's that over half of those topics aren't supposed to be there and aren't even for Arrille, digitalparanoid is still setting up all the conditions ect to clear those out

Ahhh right okay, I understand. Well then if that's the only missing line I'll get it sorted right now. Will edit this comment with a link.

Did you have a look at the volume at all? Maybe it was just me.

Edit:

There is another GREETING I remember recording for this guy. It was something like ''Welcome welcome to arrille's tradehouse! I barter for goods or coin. No credit. Want a little advice? That's free. That's all that's free. Would you like to hear about our most popular potions, our most popular scrolls?''

That one made sense being the greeting because it explains why the player can then ask him about popular potions/scrolls. Maybe its just a question of implementation. Anyway the new intro is attached.

Ya I'm pretty sure I found that one but he seems to pick the other greeting in game I only tried once though so maybe if I talk to him a few more times he will use that one, and I'll add the new one when I get home, and any other greetings I have and can find out of what you've done! What's the word on getting the conditions to slim out more topics from the dialogue of everyone is it even possible to slim it down any more as of yet?

So still working on re-recording while my comps in the shop, but it sounding pretty stellar if I do say so myself :3

Also glad to see I might have a new pal to help cover the misc lines and such, cause wow, I've barely even gotten to those O_O

It's going a bit slow though because of school so sorry on that u_u

There is still ALOT of voice work to be done and hopefully with ghalithegreat helping it won't be so bad :)

I haven't forgotten that I was going to try out, I've just been swamped with school lately and have had little time for anything else. So it'll be a couple more weeks. I tried to record a couple lines, but it's hard to find a lonely place to record around here.

Just thought I should let you know that I have completed my first characters Topic section and just completed up to Hit on the voice section, I haven't started Hit yet.

I am finding the little grunts, etc to be the hardest bits of all the recording so far!

Hey all, just registered here. Been a fan of Elder Scrolls since Daggerfall, which was my first RPG ever when I grabbed it in 1996 at the age of 16 :)

I looked at the first few posts of this thread, and I saw the basic protocols for helping out with voice acting... but despite reading that and the last few posts on this page as well, I'm not entirely clear on whether help is still needed.

I'd love to help out, and I think I'm pretty good at voices. If someone can just let me know if help is still needed, and possibly give me a suggestion of a voice to audition for? That'd be amazing. I tried to look and see how recently the post with the Excel spreadsheet had been edited, etc... but I couldn't tell. So yea, the main info I'm after is whether help is still needed.

I hope asking in this way isn't annoying.

I'm male, 32, American but pretty decent with accents.

EDIT: Btw, I am continuing to look at the spreadsheet and try to figure this all out, in the meantime, I am just a slightly impulsive person and wanted to make my presence and eagerness to assist known right away :) Just found out about this thread.

Hah, I know how you feel. Honestly just pick a character from whatever race you feel comfortable and send some lines. I still to this day don't know how to see in the spreadsheet whether someone has already claimed a line, and besides, most of the claiming seems really out of date.

Just have fun and send in what you've got. Specifics can come later.

Thanks, yea I'm looking at the spreadsheet now and frankly I've always found spreadsheets confusing... and I can't figure out which lines are claimed either. Maybe I should just record a selection of trying various voices? Like, dunmer, khajit, breton etc? I wonder if that would be useful to anyone.

Yes that would be helpful, also unfortunately the spreadsheet doesn't show what has been claimed but if it isn't assigned or completed in the first post then it should still be available

I figure you could just throw something in like I did ;p  Are you aware of what accents you master? And off course what characters you think you have the fitting accents  for ;)

Currently in the process of having my mother record some female altmer lines. She's new to VA and knows nothing about TES, but the quality should be at least the same as what I've been submitting.

She's almost 50, so should nail the kind of 'elder-race' vibe they're supposed to give off. Does that sound good to everone?
