ATTENTION! ATTENTION!

The idle banter project is now CLOSED. We've gotten all the initial submissions we need, and new volunteers are NO LONGER being accepted. This phase of the project can now be considered COMPLETE.

Hey, everybody! This thread is intended for everyone who signed up to work on writing Skywind's idle banter lines. You know who you are. While the previous thread was for writers to sign up, this thread is for the writers who have already signed up to post their progress and receive advice and recommendations from their fellow writers.

THREAD INSTRUCTIONS FOR WRITERS:

Post all your work here. Don't worry if it's not perfect yet; in fact, it's almost better if you submit rough drafts to this thread so that we can all collaborate on how to improve it. I want every writer to take some time to read the work of the other writers, in order to get inspiration from those who are doing well and to provide friendly advice for those who still need a little work. This is a place of collaboration and working towards a common goal, so we will be reviewing each others' work in a civil manner.

THREAD INSTRUCTIONS FOR NON-WRITERS:

Anyone is more than welcome to look at these writing samples and leave any advice they might have, but PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do not clutter up the thread by parroting other peoples points or leaving nonconstructive comments. We want this to be as smooth an operation as possible, and your consideration would greatly help with this.

IMPORTANT THINGS FOR EVERYONE:

Here is another link to the idle banter signup sheet, just for reference. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN SIGNING UP, PLEASE DO SO IN THE OTHER THREAD, DESIGNATED AS "WRITERS NEEDED." This thread is for people to submit work, only, to avoid any unnecessary clutter.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/16hN5gE4Ynejy4-6rVBrLuLRkDtj2htNYlIf5vKRGTMQ/edit#gid=0

ALL THE WORK I HAVE RECEIVED AS OF THE CREATION OF THIS THREAD:

Attached to this post is all the work that has been submitted to me so far, just so we can have it all in one place. Be sure to give it all a solid read-through and leave any advice you may have!

Happy writing, everyone!

@krysalynne I'm overseas right now also. I find myself and others commenting on the things they miss from home. Like for some reason Japan doesn't carry original flavor Sunchips. Every other flavor but original and goshdarnit, sometimes you just crave random food that you can't have.

@Justafan Signed up again. Hopefully it was just a one time glitch.

Okay, had some serious stuff to take care of so this was on the backburner for a bit. These are the conversations for the Morag Tong in Balmora and the Misc. Street Dwellers in Suran. Hope everyone enjoys what I've written and I'm pumped to still have a few sections left to write after this. Please tell me what you think!

Also, anyone able to take Khuul off of my hands for me? After the Suran Misc. Street Dwellers being so long I'm dreading the 30+ person trainwreck that is Balmora's.

Here is the Hall of Justice (all the areas: Hall of Justice, Ordinator Barracks, Office of the Watch, Justice Offices, and Secret Library).

@Eridanus

You can probably just remove your name from the spreadsheet for Khuul. Someone will eventually pick it up.

@maddog ... lol ... I just got a chance to actually read your Black Hawn Down reference.  I had completely forgotten about that bit of hilarity ... I've watched that movie once, but not since I deployed the first time.  Gah, I need a better sense of humor.

I've been so worried about not having the same dialogue as in the Hawkmoth Garrison, it's made me go ... "dur ... which way did he go George?"  Seriously, so frustrating, but you and twentyengine have helped jumpstart my synapses ... they may be misfiring, but hey, they're firing, that's the most important part.

Thank you again and I'll get something posted in the next few days ... barring any more issues >.> <.< ...

Cheers!

HA!  Got some done ... *claps hands and dances in circles* ^_^ ... (don't judge me >.> <.<) ... lol ... okay, hopefully this doesn't suck, but I've made some headway on the Imperial Garrison/Commission.  I ran a spell check as a preemptive measure, but I know it doesn't check for the Tamriel names properly, so please let me know if I missed any ... and, as always ^_^ ... let me know any suggestions to make it better.  At the bottom of the page are a couple of random lines, pretty much one per character to say to self.  I'm thinking I would like to add at least one more line per character so they have a couple of random thought bubbles each, but we'll see.

Okay, enough rambling ... Thank you!

Cheers!

Well, here we go. First submission for The Pilgrim's Rest. I'd like a little criticism if at all possible. :P. I might add more if you guys don't think its lengthy enough, although right now my brain's dead. So, go at it, let the merciless editing begin!

@O'lar Hammerfell

I really like the interpretations that you've given the characters. A few critiques: (1) Make sure to clean up the punctuation. This is pretty important, since voice actors will be reading the lines. (2) In the Mundrila/Ales conversation, Mundrila's line "By Oblivion it was!" sounds more like she was happy with the trip. I think you were probably going for something similar to "Like hell it was," but it's confusing as is. Also, flying rats makes me think of bats more readily than cliffracers, but that might just be me (3) Would the Ashlanders really care about someone insulting the slave trade? Even if they have slaves themselves (and I do not remember if that is the case), the trade itself is more of a House Dunmer thing. (4) Selkirnemus's concluding line in the slave market conversation does not seem to flow well with the earlier lines, since he was originally warning Miniel against insulting the slave trade, but then starts talking about how profitable it is. (5) Would a Redguard regularly drink mead? It seems more like a Nordic drink.

Also, the idle banter project is not really about lines spoken to the player, but those that are overheard. Don't just delete these, though, as they might be of use later.

Overall, I think you are skilled at creating interesting premises for your conversations, and I hope we will see more.

@krysalynne

It seems like you're going for a "bored bunch of garrison soldiers" sort of feel here. If so, I'd say it's working pretty well.

@TY, your suggestions are all valid. I noticed many of them myself(after I submitted it >_<). I'm going to go ahead and submit the fixed lines, and I might just add a few more soon.

Edit: If you didn't see this line when you downloaded this file, it was the wrong one. I forgot to save the new one when I uploaded the first time. And thus, what you were likely looking at was only half fixed.

I can say that with very few exceptions, greeting lines will not be included for these characters.  If you have good greeting ideas, you can use them for greetings between NPC instead of to the player.  Idle banter lines may (sparingly) reference the player, but as a general rule this is just to flesh out the environments and make it seem as though the world doesn't revolve around the player.

Think I'm just about finished with Hlaalu Canton Waistworks.  One of these characters ties in with a quest I wrote up for crafting ebony armor, so I wanted him to keep the same vibe.

Here are all of the areas in the Hall of Wisdom (the Hall of Wisdom lobby, Canon Quarters, and Canon Offices. The Library of Vivec was submitted separately). All of the characters here are pretty irrelevant to anything in the actual game, so I developed personalities based on what little extraneous information there is.

Oh jeez, guys, I am REALLY sorry I haven't been here the past few days. Things got unexpectedly busy for me, and I haven't even been able to check up on things in quite a while. Good news, however, is that starting tomorrow I'll have a lot more free time on my hands to devote to this. Reviews and Responses coming soon, I promise!

Here is the dialog for the external area of the Temple Canton in Vivec. Barring suggested changes, this completes that section.

Okay guys, so I am way too far behind on reviewing to do the usual nit-picky stuff I do. Besides, most of that can be easily taken care of in the editing phase. So instead, here are some general comments and suggestions.

Willowisp, Maddogpony, and twentyenginerunner, I hardly have to say anything to you guys at this point. You've got the style down, and I know you can tell what you're doing. There's a few smaller things here and there, as with all writing, that can be addressed later, but speaking in terms of the big picture, there's really nothing that needs to change. Keep up the good work!

O'lar, your writing is strong and I like the personality that you're giving to each NPC. The only major issue I noticed in this was your tendency to slip into a more olde-English style. Example: "Friend, do you yet have the drakes that are due to me?" Sentences like these, while technically grammatically correct, just aren't the way most people would speak in regular conversation. This ties in to the idea of dialect. Most of the people here on Vvardenfell aren't necessarily very literate or highly educated. As a result, many would speak with blunter sentences. "Hey, have you got those drakes you owe me yet?" or, even more bluntly, "Hey, you got my drakes yet?" I hope this clarifies things a little.

Sputnick, looking good! You're welcome to move on to another cell if you haven't already.

Eridanus, wow! You've really got some drama going on between your NPCs. That's good, but don't forget that there should also be some more toned-down conversations between NPCs as well. The brunt of interactions most people have with each other are about typically mundane topics, rather than confrontations. That's not to say that a little drama isn't great; just be sure to mix it in with some casual talk. For instance, maybe a friendly chat about how the last writ went. Also, I'm pretty sure nobody in this building would know who Yagrum Bagarn is, let alone use him for the sake of a fat joke.

Overki11, I like the changes that you've made! You could stand to maybe add a few more NPC interactions, just to provide more variety for some places that the player will probably be visiting a lot, but your writing looks strong so far!

Cbosson, I am amazed at the sheer volume of writing you've been able to put out in such a short time! Your writing is high-quality and you've captured the personalities of NPCs quite well! Allow me to address a few more technical concerns, however. I see you've been operating under the idea that NPCs will not leave their assigned cells, but in Skywind, these NPCs will actually have AI that allows them to walk around outside their homes. So it is more than possible for those solitary NPCs to have conversations with others, if you so desire to add them. Also, please separate the player-directed greetings from your dialog samples and re-upload them. I know it's a pain, but player greetings and idle banter do not go in the same category, and must be kept separate. Don't delete those player lines, as they may be useful later, but just keep them separate for now. It makes our lives as editors a lot easier. Thanks, and keep up the great work!

Svarnor, thanks for your contribution! Every little bit helps :)

Smite, that's some nice work there! I can't wait to see your quest fully implemented!

Okay, I think that's everyone. Phew. Let me know if you have any questions!

Here is what I've done for Sjorvar Horse-Mouth's house out in the West Gash so far.  He lives alone, so I wrote some things he could mutter to himself.

Sjorvar- I need a vacation.

Sjorvar- What where they thinking?  Sticking me out here alone to stop the Smugglers, the Camonna Tong.  They have caves everywhere.  How do they expect me to handle it all by myself?

Sjorvar- Damn.  Out of repair hammers.

Sjorvar- Next time I get to town I've got to  remember to buy more repair hammers.  Candles starting to burn down too.  Should get some spares while I'm there.

Sjorvar- Almost had them.  If I'd only been there a few hours before I'd have got them.  Eh, who am I kidding.  Just a drop in the ocean.

Sjorvar- Huh, who's that?

Sjorvar- Where'd I put that again?

Sjorvar- Where to try next?

Sjorvar- Sigh (Sounds worn down and tired)

Sjorvar- Hmm?

Sjorvar- What next?

Sjorvar- Just a drop in the ocean.  Sigh.

Sjorvar- Too slow...

Sjorvar- Too late...

Sjorvar- What now?

I submit this for your review.  Suggestions for revisions or additions are welcome.

Edit- It occurs to me now that there are no repair hammers in Skyrim.  I don't know in what ways game mechanics will be changed in Skywind from Skyrim, but should I remove the references to repair hammers in my next revision?

These are some idle mutterings as well as conversation for the Saint Olms Tanners and Miners Hall for the Trader Nivos Drivam, the Commoner Noldrasi Bedas, and the Ordinator who stands guard there.

First, Single lines for the Ordinator

Ordinator- I'm watching you.

Ordinator- Need to get that left gauntlet repaired when I go off duty.  I think I see a crack in it.

Ordinator- I wonder what the plumes on these helmets come from.  Never thought to ask before.

Ordinator- Damn is this ever boring.  Same thing every day.  Almost wish somebody would try something.

Ordinator- Can't wait till I get off duty.

Ordinator- She's always here.  Won't she ever make up her mind?  Or is she here to see him?  (Referring to Noldrasi Bedas)

Single lines for Noldrasi Bedas

Noldrasi- I don't know...

Noldrasi- I've lost my coin Pur- oh wait, wrong pocket.

Noldrasi- Hmm...

Single lines for Nivos Drivam

Nivos- Is that a new customer?

Nivos- Need a new supplier.  I'll run out of glass at this rate.

Nivos- Need to restock soon.

Nivos- Could be worse, all things considered.

Conversations

Noldrasi- You know, you're the only merchant I know who deals in armor, but not weapons.  You never did say why.

Nivos- It... It's personal.  Really, I wish you'd stop bringing this up.  I can't, not... I just can't anymore... Not after that.

Noldrasi- After what?

Nivos- Nothing!  I'm sorry.  Look, have you made up your mind yet.

Noldrasi- Still looking.  You know, you'll have to tell me someday.

Nivos- Sigh... You're must stubborn women I've ever met, and the least decisive.

Noldrasi- What?!

Nivos- Well it does seem like you spend all day here.

Noldrasi- I'm just a careful buyer.

Nivos- Yeah, sure.

Noldrasi- Hmph.

--

Noldrasi- I wonder if anyone has tried to make armor using ruby before.

Nivos- I think I heard of an outlander that does, or has anyway.  I forget his name, William... something.  I can't remember.  I don't know how someone would use it in armor myself, well except as an inlay of course.

Noldrasi- It certainly would draw attention.

Nivos- That much is certain.

That is it for the first draft.  Of course suggestions for revisions or additions are always welcome.

cbosson, thanks for bearing with me and making those changes! With that done, I'm happy to pass you off on those cells, and you're welcome to work on more if you so desire!

Twentyenginerunner, you've been doing this long enough to not need my help. The writing's looking good, as always!

Sam and Zetman, thanks for your submissions! They're definitely strong starts! I would have some things to ask of you, though. First, please put future submissions in a word/excel/text document attached to the comment, rather than writing directly into the comment box. This would make it easier for me to compile all the writing, and it also keeps the thread more concise and easier to navigate. Second, please refrain from writing any player-directed greetings. I'd explain why, but I've already explained this whole process dozens of times to other people in this thread, and I think it is legitimately starting to drive me insane. Just take my word on it, please, and remove all lines that involve the player. These submissions are solely for lines muttered by NPCs or lines spoken to other NPCs.

Now, with the technical stuff out of the way, let's move on to actual review. Sam, I'll start with you.

I like the little relationships you've built up between NPCs that really had no other personality to them to begin with. It really livens up the place. But there are a few common mistakes that you have to watch out for in your writing. The first is to try and avoid more modern vocabulary and references. For instance, the word "crap" would sound very out of place in a land like Tamriel, as it is actually a pretty new word in our history. A much more commonplace word would be "damn," as that has much more ancient roots. The one other thing that I'm not so sure about is your exchange between Busheeus and Falso. It just seems a little awkward that Falso would call for Busheeus's attention, and when faced with a harsh reply, just storm off. If Falso truly has no respect for Argonians, Busheeus's reply wouldn't have scared him off. If anything, I could see Falso raging at this inferior creature for such a cheeky reply. This exchange as it stands now feels a little contradictory, because Falso seems so confident and self-asserted with his first line, but then so meek at the end. If I were you, I'd toy around with different ways that conversation could play out. And don't be afraid to actually lengthen the conversation a little, so it can hold more content. I'd be interested to see where it could go.

Okay, Zetman. I really like the personality you've given to these NPCs. I like the short lines you've given to Sjorvar, so that they all resemble long sighs. Aside from removing those player greetings, I'd leave everything there just as it is. I also like your lines for the Tanners and Miners Hall quite a bit, especially your clever bit about why Nivos only sells armor. One thing to be wary of, though: We can't control the order that these conversations happen in. That means that having a conversation where Noldrasi brings up a previous one may not end up making sense.

Oh, and about the repair hammers. I don't actually know what the plan is for those, and I'm not even certain that anyone knows yet. For now, just leave those lines in, no sense throwing them away if we end up needing them later.

Good work, everyone! I'm quite impressed by what I'm seeing!

Here is Sjorvar's dialogue with the directed revisions.  I haven't made any additions yet, but something I've been thinking about is should I write anything he might mutter commenting on the current weather?

Things like "Looks like rain" or "That's some heavy fog rolling in" or "Damn it's hot today" and so on.  Or would that be outside the scope of what I should be doing?

And here is the next version for The Saint Olms Tanners and Miners Hall.  I've made a few revisions and added another conversation.

About being careful not to reference previous conversations, I'm trying to give a sense that this is something they have gone over multiple times that she just won't let go.  I get what you say about referencing other conversations I add though.  I have tweaked it a bit in this version.

As always, suggestions for revisions and additions are always welcome.

Edit- An idea I've just had is adding conversations about quests that you have active that they might reasonably have heard about.  Like the one about murders in Vivec.  When it is active they could talk about it.  And then when you complete it they could talk about how glad they are that it is over.  Let me know what you think and if you like the concept I'll put it in the next revision.

Oh jeez, it's been five days since the last post on this thread.

I know how you all must be feeling, and trust me, I'm feeling it too. We're nearing the end of this part of the project. Almost all the cells have been claimed, and most are finished. We're nearly there. But this is no time to lose focus. It's easy to sit back and let others finish the job, but when everyone starts to employ that tactic, nothing gets done. It's been a long road, and most of us by now are probably sick and tired of writing.

But that's all the more reason to get this finished, right here and now. This is my call to all you writers who are still with us. One final push. I want everyone to claim at least one cell and write it. I want the people who have signed up and never done anything to complete their pieces, or give them up to someone who will. If we all do one, just one piece, we can finish ALL the drafts for idle banter.

I know you have it in you, guys. One last piece. We're mere feet from the finish line. We can do this.

Oh, and on another note, dragon015 and Zetman, those lines are looking pretty solid. Dragon, just be sure to watch out for those run-on sentences. Zetman, I like the revisions you've made. In regards to your quest-specific dialog, that would be quite okay, and even encouraged. Just try not to over-use it, or else it will make things more difficult for the implementers of said dialog. But if there's a little bit mixed in with the regular dialog, it's great stuff. :)

Hey, just thought I might as well post this, I finally finished the dialog for miscellaneous ashlanders! And they're even in fully fleshed-out Dunmeri! Whoa!

Here is the next revision for both.  You didn't say anything for the comments about the weather for Sjorvar, so I just put a few at the end of the document.  They can easily be removed if need be.
